Inspite of the presence of great contemporary artists Chris Foss and Roger Dean, John Harris strived and succeeded in creating a space of his own in this world of imaginative landscaping. The work of John Harris is deeply influenced by the images and visuals that he sees in his dreams, imaginations and while meditating. John’s work staunchly revolves around the presence of weird soaring and hanging structures. There are several colliding space bodies that can easily be found in his work. His passion for carving sci – fi landscapes began at a very early age. This led him to paint a cover page for Philip Dunn’s creating Cities in Flight. The year 1985 saw him commissioning an illustration for a rocket launch at NASA. Ever since then the work of John Harris was regarded in the category of Isaac Asimov and Jack Vance. However, John Harris completely disagrees to the point of his styling. He explains to this point as, “It always puzzles me when this issue of style comes up, because I don’t consciously have a style. This is not being disingenuous. I simply try to paint what is in my mind’s eye. If people recognize my style, maybe what they are seeing is simply a feeling or vision that is personal to me. Maybe that is why it appears to withstand fashion — because it isn’t a fashion. There’s a future out there, unknowable, but thrilling. After all this time, I still feel it.”
John Harris has been a rockstar in his time. When his time of people experienced and enjoyed the drug culture, rock and roll and hippie style, various artists in his time used to get influenced by his form of art. During that time, falling in the laps of spiritual awareness was also on its high. But his love for sci – fi never phased out. He explains, “I think most of my generation felt it. It was the zeitgeist and art colleges brewed it.”
