We celebrated this year’s Festas de São João in Vila do Conde (20km north of Porto), marked by a procession out of Igreja Matriz de Vila do Conde, also known as Igreja de São João Batista. The church is a formidable structure built in Portuguese Manueline style and classified as a national monument. Construction began at the end of the 15th century, and more chapels and features added by various architects during the 16th century. The bell tower was completed in the 17th, the ornate gilt from Brazil added the following century.
