Australia could support new powers for the World Health Organization in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, said Minister of Health Greg Hunt at the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA) 'World Health Organization.
He urged the international community to "learn lessons" to determine whether the mandate and powers of WHO should be strengthened.
He said Australia supported an impartial and comprehensive review of the global response to the epidemic.
At the same time, at the virtual meeting, the British Secretary of Health, Matt Hancock, said that the United Kingdom supported an investigation into the global response to the coronavirus "at the right time".
"For now, we must all stay focused on fighting the virus, and of course, a vaccine will be our best weapon in this fight," said Hancock.
Some background: Over 100 countries have proposed a draft resolution calling for an independent "assessment" of the coronavirus pandemic.
The motion is accompanied by international support from countries such as India, New Zealand, the Russian Federation, the European Union and its member states, as well as the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. The United States is not one of the signatories.
The project does not specifically mention China or Beijing, but China has faced increasing international scrutiny for its initial management of the COVID-19 epidemic.
