If You DO One OTHER Thing in London This Week…

Our Tuesday slot in which we point you in the direction of other great happenings and events in our great city. An exhibition, a gig, a museum, a pop-up-shop – the best of London within a few minutes of a London Walks walking tour.
In this centenary year the National Portrait Gallery is marking the First World War with a major exhibition.

The Guardian praised the breadth and balance of the exhibition:
“In the spirit of revisionists who accuse leftwing historians of writing out the war's noble side, it includes portraits of the heroes who made the war seem like a chivalric spectacle after all. Flying ace Gilbert Insall stands in leather coat with slicked hair: he fought off an enemy attack and repaired his downed plane under German artillery fire, getting home safely to win the VC.”
The Daily Telegraph noticed that the full horror of the conflict was never far away:
“Undoubtedly the most moving images on show, though, are the pastel drawings by Henry Tonks of facially disfigured soldiers awaiting reconstructive surgery back in Blighty.”
The exhibition is free.

The London & The First World War walk goes every Monday at 2:30pm from St James’s Park station.
