Idlewild share ‘Dream Variations’ and reveal ‘Interview Music’ album details

Scottish rock royalty Idlewild have announced details of new album ‘Interview Music’ (out on 5 April via Empty Words) and unveiled its opener ‘Dream Variations’ as their new single.

The five-minute song opens with woozy guitar effects before the more traditional Idlewild riffs come in alongside perfectly pitched piano, gorgeous vocal harmonies and Roddy Woomble’s confessional lyrics: ‘I’m not scared of silent devotion, I came, I saw, I changed my point of view’ and talk of making the world a better place.

Roddy continues to offer astute observations (‘The old man follows the moon and the young man follows the sun. Deeper in the depths of living, it’s the words that burn’) before the music takes an off-kilter and psychedelic Beach Boys-meets-The Flaming Lips turn. It finishes with Roddy pondering: ‘Dreams, why do they have to be so cruel? Why do they have to be part of communication?’
