One of the UK’s most vital bands, Idles have announced their return with pro-immigration anthem ‘Danny Nedelko’. The song will appear on their upcoming second album ‘Joy as an Act of Resistance.’ (out on 31 August via Partisan Records – pre-order here) and will be supported by the Bristolian five-piece’s first ever world tour.
Amidst fuzzy post-punk guitars and relentless, clattering drums, the song opens with Joe Talbot celebrating his nearest and dearest: ‘My blood brother is an immigrant, a beautiful immigrant. My blood brother’s Freddie Mercury, a Nigerian mother of three’ and then rallies against the unfair way people in the UK are treated just for having the audacity to be born in another county, even though essentially we’re all the same: ‘He’s made of bones, he’s made of flesh… He’s made of you, he’s made of me’.
As the song ups the tempo, Joe warns those in charge what happens if they keep spreading lies and treating people with disdain: ‘Fear leads to panic, panic leads to pain, pain leads to anger, anger leads to hate’. It’s a very timely song that encourages everyone to celebrate our differences and leaves us waiting for the new album with baited breath.
