Idles have shared ‘A Hymn’ – the third single to be taken from their eagerly awaited third album ‘Ultra Mono’ (out on 25 September via Partisan Records. Directed by Ryan Gander, the video finds the band driving various parents to supermarkets – encountering all aspects of gray and drizzly suburban English life along the way.
Joe Tabot says the song ‘is a hymn that rejoices in the sinister flesh-eating virus of the pedestrian’. Building up slower than most Idles singles, although boiling over with simmering intent, the song finds Joe declaring ‘I want to be loved’ before talking about hot zumba classes at a new church, losing weight for a wedding and how ‘shame cuts rip real nice as we change lanes’. As the angular and atmospheric, almost post-punk, guitars continue to resonate, he delivers a line so many of a certain age will agree with (especially this writer who spent a week on work experience at Planet Sound): ‘Teletext has a place in my heart’.
