Identifying high schoolers with mental illness
I think it would be hard to find anyone who didn't suffer from depression at some point in high school. The littlest things seem to be such a big deal. I am sure we all faced some disappointment back then and our kids are bound to go through the same thing. But how do you know what's normal and what is a serious problem? I have interviewed too many parents who of kids who have committed suicide. The recurring theme is, "I didn't even know he/she was depressed or that anything was wrong." I have it heard it so many times, it's scary. So if a little 10 minute questionnaire could save a life, I say go for it!
FROM NBC: A simple screening could help identify millions of high schoolers at risk for mental illness. Researchers at Columbia University gave a 10 minute questionnaire to a group of 25-hundred students over four years. They found almost three-quarters of those considered to be at risk for mental health problems were not in treatment at the time of the screening.
