I like Miley Cyrus. I’ve always liked Miley Cyrus. I liked Hannah Montana, I liked post-Hannah Miley and I like new Miley. Don’t get me wrong, I know she’s quite a ridiculous character and I know a lot of people dislike her, but I like the hits, I think she looks awesome and I rather enjoy her don’t-give-a-fuck attitude.
Last night I went to the Bangerz tour and it was genuinely one of my favorite shows. This girl really does know how to put on a show. Start to finish she gave it absolutely everything, maximum energy, maximum fun, I never stopped dancing for a minute.
I actually saw her in 2009 and, enjoyable as that was, her heart wasn’t really in it. The shows received a lot of reviews saying she seemed tired and didn’t have much enthusiasm for it and that’s true, her voice was great of course but she wasn’t really going for it.
This time was completely different. You could just tell she was in her element. Yes it’s hyper sexual and over the top and absolutely crazy but good god it’s so much fun, it’s totally unique and unlike any other show I’ve been to. I was in my element too. Singing every word, going crazy all night. It even rained Miley dollars! It’s funny, the reviews of this show were all 4 or 5 stars but the descriptions were like it’s absolutely ridiculous, but when you get there, you get it, it is totally 5 stars but it’s so insane you can’t even believe it, truly it is the most fun. Her costumes are barely there (but she looks totally class in them), the sets are amazing, she does so much with the stage, it’s basically just a massive party and if you read anything that’s actually come from her – that’s exactly what she wanted.
I think when you see Miley live you really get it, this is a girl doing exactly what she wants and is totally in control of her career. No, not everyone likes it, but that doesn’t matter, a lot of people do like it and she’s clearly happy and has gotten to a place creatively that she’s always wanted, outside of the Disney bubble. I think people are more offended by her because she had that platform in the first place and it’s SUCH a dramatic shift that it’s more shocking than if anyone else did it. I always just think if you don’t like someone then just ignore them otherwise you’re just drawing more attention – and that’s clearly what she wants. I don’t understand the level of vicious abuse she gets to be honest, it’s a shame because it makes it almost like you shouldn’t admit to liking her but you know what, I really like her, I think she’s great.
Sky Ferreira supported last night and she was also absolutely great. I don’t think many people in the room really knew who she was, I don’t know if she’s really got her stride in the UK yet but I was over the moon to be able to see her. Her voice was excellent and she played all the hits, again, I sung every word. A girl even came over and asked who she was because I knew all the words ha.
This was also my first time at the new Leeds Arena and it is now my favorite arena I’ve ever visited. Leeds Arena is different from others because it was designed for music, not sports like everywhere else. It really makes a big difference. It’s very intimate for an arena and there isn’t a seat in the house with a bad view, it’s absolutely ideal. I recommend you see someone there as soon as you can. I hope this becomes the main arena for the north because it’s just better than all the others.
Basically, it was an absolutely excellent night and I think Miley deserves every bit of success because it’s so uncommon to see someone with this level of fame not fitting into a pigeon hole, doing exactly what they want and seeming to be genuinely happy. I think it’s great.
