I Saw You Creeping 'round the Garden, What Are You Hiding? I Beg Your Pardon, Don't Tell Me Nothing

By Alyssapageot @alyssapageot
Every year, W Magazine realeases a "movie issue" with their list of actors and actresses with the Best Performances. This year, for February 2015, they have chosen 37 celebrities that have starred in movies from 2014, who were deemed the brightest stars. "The Movie Issue" by Lynn Hirschberg, includes seven different covers, and 38 photos of the various celebs, all shot by the one and only (my favorite photographer of all-time) Tim Walker.
Styled by Jacob K, these fabulous photos embody everything that is Tim Walker; his signature style is unlike any other photographer out there, and there are many elements of this photoshoot that tie the whole thing together. Obviously there's the consistent use of flowers, stripes, and bright colourful high fashions. Tim was inspired by the colourful "sun-drenched" paintings of David Hockney, who himself was inspired by Los Angeles, amongst many other places and things. There is a very prominent aesthetic of the 70's, and the hippy, free-love movement; as well as an overall strong influence of surrealism. Camera tricks and over-sized props make for an unusual perspective on some of these shots; the use of oversized props is another common element to a Tim Walker photoshoot. One thing I like about this shoot is that some of the actors are almost unrecognizable at first, because they are dressed so wildly out of character, with exaggerated features and clothes you'd not normally see them in.
Aside from the gorgeous clothes and accessories used in this shoot, the focal point is obviously the stars. Each has been in a movie (or two, or more) in the past year that was critically acclaimed, as was their performances, which is why they were selected for this photoshoot. Each person has given a quote about life in the movie world, most of which are centered around their experiences from childhood, first-times in acting biz, crushes, their favorite love stories, influences from other actors, and their recent experiences in the movies they shot over the past year. It's interesting to note that a lot of the movies these artists were selected for performing in, are based off of the lives of real people; including Stephen Hawking, Margaret Keane, and Martin Luther King Jr. to name a few.
So, to begin, here are the seven different covers that were shot for W Magazine:

I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Amy Adams in Gucci shirt and scarf; Tom Ford sunglasses. This is one of my favorite shots, which may have something to do with how badly I want to see Big Eyes (my favorite singer Lana Del Rey wrote two fantastic songs for the movie)
Nominated for her performance in 'Big Eyes'
A film based on the life of artist Margaret Keane (played by Amy Adams), and the relationship with her husband, played by Christoph Waltz. Released December 25, 2014
“My favorite love story is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I like messed-up, strong women,
and Holly Golightly has both great vulnerability and strength. She’s found a way to change her reality and then, surprisingly, finds someone she truly trusts. A man who’s willing to stand by a woman who is trapped by the persona she’s created—that’s my kind
of love story.” - Amy Adams
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Benedict Cumberbatch in Canali sweater; Thomas Pink shirt; Umit Benan pants; Tabio socks; Mr. Lacy shoelaces; Converse sneakers

A film based on the life of British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing (played by Benedict Cumberbatch). His Invention, the Turing machine, was a precursor to the modern day computer. Released November 28, 2014
“Both my parents are actors, and they discouraged me from the profession. But I thought their lives were so romantic.
I did loads of plays when I was at school. It was all boys, so
I got to play girls. It’s scary how epicene I was. I got the female thing down. My parents were a little worried at that point—they thought they’d lost me to the other side
of the board.” - Benedict Cumberbatch
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Benedict Cumberbatch in Philipp Plein suit; Keira Knightley in Chanel blouse and shirt
Nominated for their performances in 'The Imitation Game'
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Keira Knightley in J.W. Anderson shirt; Patricia Underwood hat
Nominated for her performance in 'The Imitation Game'
A film based on the life of Alan Turing, Keira Knightley plays the role of Joan Clarke, Turing's coworker and friend who became his fiancée, though they never went through with the marriage because Turing was gay. Released November 28, 2014
“I got a Scarlett O’Hara doll when I was 11. You know the red dress she wears when she comes in as a whore? I wanted my doll to be in that dress—to be that Scarlett. The image of her in the red whore gown imprinted
itself on me. It’s really a sexy scene in Gone With the Wind, and she’s such a bitch. That’s when I realized it would be interesting to play characters that are not likable.” - Keira Knightley
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Keira Knightley in J.W. Anderson shirt
Nominated for her performance in 'The Imitation Game'
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Bill Hader in Marc Jacobs suit and socks; vest and shirt from Carlo Manzi, London; Erickson Beamon brooch; Solange Azagury-Partridge ring (on pinkie);
J.W. Anderson shoes. This is another favorite shot of mine, again possibly biased because I absolutely adore Bill Hader, mostly due to Saturday Night Live. I still haven't seen The Skeleton Twins but would very much so like to
Nominated for his performance in 'The Skeleton Twins'
A film about two fraternal twins (one of which is played by Bill Hader), living separate and complicated lives. Co-starring Kristen Wiig as Bill Hader's twin sister. Released January 18, 2014
“My parents were big movie
buffs, and they didn’t really care what I watched. My dad let me
see A Clockwork Orange when I was around 10. I said, ‘Oh, my God—this woman just got raped!’ And my dad was like, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah—but you know what they’re doing is bad, right?’ He thought, It’s Kubrick; it’s a great movie. Everything will be all right if the movie is great.” - Bill Hader
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Bradley Cooper in Louis Vuitton jacket and trousers;
J.W. Anderson shoes
Nominated for his performance in 'American Sniper'
A film based on the life of Chris Kyle (played by Bradley Cooper), former Navy SEAL, and the most accurate sniper in military history, with the most recorded confirmed kills in the history of the U.S. military. Released December 25, 2014
“I had advantages in making a film about the Iraq war.
On USO tours, I went to bases in the middle of nowhere in enemy territory. I was with the soldiers in their barracks, and I really got a sense of it. And, oddly, I had experience from having starred in The A-Team. I learned how
to shoot guns for that film. After making it, an M-4
felt as comfortable to me as
a tennis racquet.” - Bradley Cooper
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Sienna Miller in Coach jacket; Anna Sui vest and blouse; Hilfiger Collection shorts and scarf. Another favorite shot of mine, mostly because I love this furry pink jacket
Nominated for her performance in 'American Sniper'
A film based on the life of Chris Kyle, Sienna Miller plays Taya Renae Kyle, wife of Chris Kyle. Released December 25, 2014
“For my first part ever, I played
a girl named Stacey in a BBC drama. She was the really trashy, wrong-side-of-the-tracks girlfriend
of a geeky boy. I had to say the
most embarrassing lines: She called a man’s genitalia ‘a purple-headed trouser beast.’ It was so humiliating that I almost quit acting.” - Sienna Miller
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Carmen Ejogo in Bally blazer; Sonia Rykiel
jumpsuit; Giorgio Armani beret; Erickson Beamon brooch;
Look From London Hosiery tights; Tom Ford sandals
Nominated for her performance in 'Selma'A film based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by James Bevel, Hosea Williams, and Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis. Carmen Ejogo plays the role of Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King Jr. Released December 25, 2014
“Coretta Scott King was all about her pearls. At one point, I’m wearing pearl earrings
the size of golf balls. They’re enormous! She was bold—she knew that she was the Jackie Kennedy of her community.” - Carmen Ejogo
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

“Being British, I was able to play Martin Luther King Jr. as a human being rather than as an icon, a historical figure, a holiday. He wasn’t part of my life the way he is for African-Americans. They grew
up with photographs of Jesus, JFK, and Dr. King in their homes.” - David Oyelowo
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Chadwick Boseman in Bottega Veneta jacket and pocket square; Prada vest and shirt; Umit Benan pants; Lanvin cravat from
Carlo Manzi, London; Falke socks; Church’s shoes
Nominated for his performance in 'Get On Up'A film based on the life of singer James Brown. Chadwick Boseman plays the role of James Brown. Released August 1, 2014
“To play James Brown, I would rehearse with a tight suit on. That’s the easiest way to get into character: the dress pants, the leather shoes,
the button-down shirt, sometimes even a tie. To really understand the nuances of Brown’s dance style, you had to be properly dressed like him at all times. When he danced, he wanted you to see the crease in his trousers, the line of his sleeve, and, of course, his pinkie ring. So you had to have that on to show it off.” Chadwick Boseman
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Dan Stevens in Polo Ralph Lauren sweater; Gucci pants. Another favorite shot of mine, I actually had no idea who Dan Stevens was, but I must say he is quite handsome. I just love the flower-beard

“After Downton Abbey, I wanted to master an American accent. I had a friend record the Gettysburg Address, and, for some reason, that speech has all the sounds that you need. It also means that I’ve now memorized the Gettysburg Address, which is good, too.” - Dan Stevens
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Eddie Redmayne in Calvin Klein Collection blouson
Nominated for his performance in 'The Theory of Everything'A film based on the life of physicist Stephen Hawking, (played by Eddie Redmayne) his success in physics, his diagnosis of motor neuron disease, and the relationship with his wife, Jane Wilde Hawking. Released September 7, 2014
“To play Stephen Hawking, I made a chronological graph of his physical condition. I literally listed the muscles breaking down scene by scene—what glasses he was wearing, whether he
was using one or two walking sticks, what wheelchair he was in. One of
the toughest things was the different wheelchairs. Trying to hit all the marks and stay in character without moving any muscles was both interesting and nearly impossible.” - Eddie Redmayne
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Eddie Redmayne in Loewe sweater, scarf, trousers, and shoes
Nominated for his performance in 'The Theory of Everything'

Nominated for his performance in 'Birdman'A film about the complex connection between ego ambition and creativity. Edward Norton plays the role of Mike Shiner, a popular Broadway actor. Released November 14, 2014
“Acting in your underwear—or less—can make you self-conscious, but in Birdman, my character has so much preening self-regard
that if you get into that head space, being naked is actually freeing. He’s not worried—
so why should I be? He wants you to look at him, so, you know, take a look.” - Edward Norton
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Emma Stone in Valentino gown; Moody and Farrell hat; Eugenia Kim turban; Monica Rich Kosann necklace. Another favorite shot of mine, I've always loved Emma Stone, and I particularly love her Twiggy-esque make-up here
Nominated for her performance in 'Birdman'
A film about the complex connection between ego ambition and creativity, Emma Stone plays the role of Sam Thomson, Riggan Thomson's daughter and assistant. Released November 14, 2014
“My favorite love story is Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The relationship between John Candy and Steve Martin is so touching.
I must like male love stories because my cinematic crush of the moment is the cast of Foxcatcher. Channing Tatum just knifed me
in the gut and ran. He slayed me—I don’t even know what to
do with myself.” - Emma Stone
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Michael Keaton in Etro trenchcoat and trousers; Z Zegna
shirt; Jil Sander sneakers

A film about a faded Hollywood actor, Riggan Thomson, played by Michael Keaton; and the complex connection between ego ambition and creativity. Released November 14, 2014
“Stand-up comedy is one of the hardest, most exhilarating things you can do. There’s no character to hide behind, and it’s your philosophy on full view. In
the beginning, when I did stand-up I had nothing to lose. It’s best to maintain
that attitude for your entire career—
the trick is to always work like you’re
at the base of the pyramid.” - Michael Keaton
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

play a princess. I watched
all the animated Disney
films, and there were two blondes like me: Cinderella
and Aurora. My sister
liked Cinderella, but Aurora
in Sleeping Beauty was
mine because of her pink
dress. Pink was my color.” - Elle Fanning
Dakota Fanning nominated for her performance in 'Night Moves'
A film about three radical environmentalists who plot to blow up a dam. Dakota Fanning plays the role of Dena, an eco-terrorist. Released April 30, 2014
“For Night Moves, I dyed my hair dark. That was a shock. Everyone acted differently toward me—even my family. My mom has dark hair and dark eyes, so I’ve never really looked like her. For the first time, we were similar. And
she was not into it. [Laughs]
The day after the movie
ended, I went back to being
blonde—and myself.” - Dakota Fanning

Will Ferrell is a man.” - Meryl Streep
“I have a crush on Roy Scheider in Jaws. It’s the way that cigarette dangles out the side of his mouth. No one smokes a cigarette like him.” - Emily Blunt
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Ethan Hawke in Gucci tank top; Erickson Beamon brooch. Another favorite shot of mine, particularly because I have had a crush on Ethan Hawke since the first time I saw Reality Bites, and he sang The Violent Femmes; and I like that they tied in his bird tattoo with the bird brooch
Nominated for his performance in 'Boyhood'
A film about a young boy and his struggles to cross over into adulthood. Ethan Hawke plays Mason Sr., the father of the main character. Released July 11, 2014
“Becoming a ‘celebrity’ after Reality Bites made it hard
to grow up. It created a false reality. You think girls like you, but, really, they like the idea of celebrity. Back then,
I would take girls home and they would accidentally call me Troy, which was the name of my character.” - Ethan Hawke

I kept thinking, Dreams are real.” - Imogen Poots

The kid was caught and got what he deserved, but I don’t know why they kept approaching me for these roles.” - Jack O'Connell
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

“I started my career in stand-up comedy. I didn’t have jokes—
my stand-up was a half-on-a-date/half-in-a-therapy-session version of me. I liked to wear dresses onstage and look how I’d look if I was going out with someone I liked. My goal was
to be an American movie
actress, and stand-up was my

“The part I play in Interstellar was originally written
for a man. It was about a father and son, rather than a father and daughter. When Christopher Nolan, the director, switched the gender, I don’t think much about the character changed. And that shows you that Hollywood could easily take more chances with female characters: Men and women aren’t that different.” - Jessica Chastain
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Oscar Isaac in Ami jacket; Boss shirt; Giorgio Armani pants

her, I said, ‘I wrote your name

I were listening to the radio back then. I played a lot of Tommy James and the Shondells. I blocked out everything current—until the day I got into Joaquin Phoenix’s car. Although he was playing the lead in this period movie, he was listening to hard-core rap. So much for mood influencing character.” - Katherine Waterson

 it’s just a hiking movie—and
that’s not interesting.” - Reese Witherspoon
I saw you creeping 'round the garden, what are you hiding? I beg your pardon, don't tell me nothing

Scarlett Johansson in Miu Miu top, skirt, and belt. My voice was too deep.
It confused people.” - Scarlett Johansson
