Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that politicians never retire and that he has decided not to contest the 2024 Parliamentary Elections.

Mahinda Rajapaksa said this responding to questions raised by media reporters on his decision not to contest the upcoming Parliamentary Elections yesterday (16).

Former President Rajapaksa clarified stating that not contesting the 2024 Parliamentary polls is only a temporary decision made by him and that he had not retired from politics.

He also reiterated that the Rajapaksa clan has only temporarily left this time from contesting the upcoming General Elections and that not all Rajapaksas who are not contesting this time as Shasheendra Rajapaksa is contesting the 2024 General Election from Moneragala.

Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is ready for the forthcoming Parliamentary Elections and will be winning the election comfortably with a majority.

Questioned if he had listened to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent speech stating that it is the first time in Sri Lankan political history that politicians are retiring and whether he agrees to what the President has said, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that he has not listened to that speech and will not agree with it, citing that there are many others who are not contesting the upcoming General Elections besides him and that politicians don’t retire.

Rajapaksa further expressed confidence saying that the SLPP will receive enough votes and will quite comfortably secure a majority by winning 113 seats at the 2024 Parliamentary Elections.
