I Got Spicy...

By Boberika @boberika

When I'm on holiday, I normally don't have too much of a plan, as I like to stumble across things randomly. I find I uncover the best places, people and objects when I'm following my heart, eyes and stomach. So you can imagine I was delighted when I stumbled across the Mellah market (the Spice market, as it's also known) in the old Jewish quarter, after heading towards the main city. I had mini heart palpitations looking at all the piles of spices and whipped out my camera to snap away!

Knowing spices lose their freshness after a month, I didn't go too wild with my spending and only purchased fresh cinnamon sticks, cumin, herbal tea, cardamom, nutmeg and had a few cups of mint tea with the locals in the store (this was one of the many highlights of the trip). In this area there were so many tiny shops selling vegetables, spices, and the most incredible little desserts. It was the perfect place to wander (as Jamie Oliver said "it's like Aladdin's Cave in every store"). Now every time I open my food cupboard I get an intense smell of my delicious fresh Morrocan spices…
