Huawei's U.S. troubles may be far from over, but the Chinese company appears to be pushing new phone rollouts. According to a Digitimes According to reports, Huawei plans to launch three new foldable phones in the second half of this year.
Citing industry sources, the outlet also reports that Huawei may introduce lower prices for the new leaflets, "which target the entry-level segment."
These new models, along with the foldable phones Samsung is expected to launch this year, could boost global shipments in this category to 20 million units in 2021, compared to 2.8 million units shipped last year Digitimes Research.
The last foldable phone from Huawei was the Mate X2, which launched in February. It's not for everyone, however, as it costs a whopping 17,999 yuan (~ $ 2,771). Also, the phone is currently only available in China, so access to it is limited.
The new, cheaper foldable Huawei phones could be launched outside of the company's home market if the value proposition is enough to wow buyers in the West. Google services will most likely not be available on the phones, and we're also not sure how the chipset situation will play out given the current restrictions on Huawei.
The company is currently rumored to be preparing the flagship P50 series. The phones were originally supposed to hit the market in March and then April, but as of now there is no sign of any sooner. It is possible that Huawei, like many other smartphone OEMs, is struggling to produce enough units due to the global chipset crisis.
Either way, we'll just have to wait and see what Huawei has in store and how the company develops this year. There are already signs of declining smartphone sales and shipments are said to be halved this year.
