The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), which has commenced an investigation into the incident of a senior male police officer manhandling two junior female police officers during a protest march on Saturday (12), has summoned the police officer in question and his superior officer tomorrow (17). The Commission’s Media Spokesman told the Daily News yesterday that the HRCSL has begun a probe on the incident on its own initiative. The HRCSL has also sought a report on the matter from the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In addition, the HRCSL has summoned the Public Security Ministry’s Secretary and the IGP on November 21 over the questionable behavior of police officers in multiple incidents reported recently. The HRCSL has stressed that it could not accept the behavior of certain police officers who recently attempted to hinder peaceful protests, thus breaching the people’s right to expression. The Spokesman said measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents will be highlighted during the meeting.
