It’s been a long 22 years for Scotland fans, since their appearance at France 1998, when they were just 17 minutes away from a famous draw with Brazil in the group stages. They haven’t qualified for a major tournament since. Although there’s been plenty of laughing at England in the meantime, the Tartan Army is yearning to return to the big stage.
And they have a golden opportunity to do so tonight in Serbia. A victory in this play-off game will take the Scots to the delayed Euro 2020 finals, which will take place next summer. Should Steve Clarke’s men triumph on away soil, they will join England, Croatia and the Czech Republic in Group D.
The Scots, led by Liverpool left-back Andy Robinson, are unbeaten in their last eight games. However, the Serbs are heavy favourites, with Scotland at 4/1 to win tonight’s tie, which will be decided by extra-time and penalties if necessary.
