How to Use It to Save Fuel?

Posted on the 23 January 2023 by L'Express

In this period of persistently high prices at the pump, we all want, as motorists, to reduce our fuel consumption. No more room for waste! Yes, but now, your new generation car is equipped with a system that you use little, out of fear but also following the rumors circulating about it. Here is how and why, you will manage to reduce your consumption by ten percent, thanks to it. Practical, right?!

Adopting eco-driving means, among other things, limiting high acceleration and avoiding jolts. Actions that will allow you to save fuel. But one car system allows you to achieve this effortlessly: cruise control. You just need to familiarize yourself with it and take a few precautions to make great savings.

How does cruise control work?

Visible on your steering wheel or on the commodo, the cruise control is a system which analyzes the resistance of the wheels, thanks to sensors which send the information to it. You tell it the desired speed and it does the rest. Engineers gave him access to speed up and speed down controls. Be reassured, the regulator can only intervene over a very short range and above all never forget that at any time, by pressing the brake pedal you will unhook the driving assistant.

When and why to use cruise control?

Cruise control is not made for all roads and all circumstances… It is ineffective in traffic jams, on small roads without visibility and especially not on steep roads. At the top of a hill, the regulator cannot anticipate: this information is in real time. Whereas as a motorist you know these procedures from experience. But on the highway, a long journey is a major asset for saving money. On these large strips of asphalt, the engineers calculated the curves, slopes and climbs, installed bridges and tunnels to allow motorists to drive at higher speeds. Whatever suits your regulator. It will save you money!

The speed exceeded, let the cruise control do its job

Driving at 130 km/h does not save you much time and costs you money. 10 km over an hour… on a 500 km journey, that’s just a gain of 23 minutes! For 1,000 km, only 40 minutes… On the other hand consumption, 5 or 10 liters more… at the price of fuel!

The experiment is easy to conduct. Switch your screen to instant consumption. Depending on the engine of your vehicle at 130 km/h, the counter will indicate for example 6.7 l/100km. Try setting your regulator to 120: you will see this figure drop significantly: 6.2 litres… by lowering a little more you will drop below the 6 liter mark, approximately 5.7 litres, i.e. one liter of gain! Over a 500 km journey… imagine the savings made!

Other “eco-driving” gestures to reduce your consumption

Anticipate your maneuvers according to the terrain and driving conditions, have a soft pedal, if necessary check your consumption live, you will gain a lot! The light foot, the reasoned braking and the courtesy allow real fuel savings.
