Things to know before using Apple Advance Data Protection for iCloud:
- Your devices must be running iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, and watchOS 9.2 (or later).
- Turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple ID.
- Set up at least one recovery contact or recovery key because if you lose your device or forget your password, you are the only one who can recover your data. Apple won't have your backup iCloud encryption keys.
- You can't enable extended data protection for managed Apple IDs and child accounts.
iOS 16 brings a host of new features, and Apple is putting more emphasis on user security. So, the recent iOS 16.2 updates offer a new feature called Enhanced Data Protection for iCloud. It provides end-to-end encryption and enhances iCloud with additional layers of security. Want to protect your iCloud data? Let's learn how to use Advance Data Protection for iCloud on iPhone or iPad.
What is Extended Data Protection?
Apple has always offered industry-class data protection to its users. Apple Advanced Data Protection will now expand the categories of sensitive data from 14 to 23, including iCloud Backup, Notes, and Photos. So they can use end-to-end encryption which ensures that no hackers (or even) can decrypt your data.
Until now, enabling iCloud Advanced Data Protection was optional. So when you turn it on, only your trusted devices can access your iCloud data. In addition, it will include iCloud Keychain processing. Selecting end-to-end encryption for iCloud will remove your previous iCloud authentication.
Plus, your new iCloud data will be protected with a new service key that's only available to your trusted devices. Therefore, Apple will no longer have access to your encrypted cloud data, even if there is a data breach in the cloud services.
"Advanced Data Protection is Apple's highest level of cloud data security, giving users the ability to protect the vast majority of their most important iCloud data with end-to-end encryption so it can only be decrypted on their trusted devices."
Ivan Krstic, Apple's Head of Safety and Architecture
How to enable advanced data protection in iOS 16.2
Keep in mind that turning on Enhanced Data Protection on one device will turn it on for all of your devices associated with your Apple ID. Here I mentioned the steps for iPhone and iPad.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Select iCloud.
- Scroll down and tap "Advanced Data Protection".
- After that, select "Turn on advanced data protection".
Now, if you have not set up a recovery key, you will be prompted to set up account recovery.
- After setting up account recovery, return to the Advanced Data Protection page. If all of your devices associated with your Apple ID don't have the most recent version of the operating system, it will notify you which ones need to be updated. You can also unlink this device from settings.
- Once all requirements are met, enable and use Apple Advance Data Protection for iCloud. You will be prompted to complete a few additional verification steps. So, enter your recovery key and lock the passcode as needed.
- At the end, you will receive confirmation that Advanced Data Protection is enabled.
For Mac, you need to go to Apple Menu → System Preferences → click your name → iCloud → Advanced Data Protection → click Turn On.
To disable this feature, go to Settings → tap your name → iCloud → Advanced data protection → Turn off advanced data protection. And follow the prompts on the screen.
Changes after turning on iCloud Advanced Data Protection
You may experience some changes after enabling Advanced Data Protection. This will disable access to your iCloud data online on iCloud.com. This way, your data is only available on your trusted devices. If you want to enable it, allow temporary access to your online data using one of your trusted devices.
If you've set up Family Sharing, all shared data such as iCloud Shared Photo Library, iCloud Drive Shared Folders, and Shared Notes will be end-to-end encrypted. But all participants must enable this feature on their devices.
Also, Advanced Data Protection is not supported by iWork Collaboration. So your shared photo albums or shared files with "anyone with the link" will only have traditional data security measures, not end-to-end encryption.
Other Apple Security Measures for User Data
In addition to advanced data protection for iCloud, Apple has released two new tools to protect users' personal data and conversations. This is iMessage contact key verification and Apple ID security keys. Checking the iMessage contact key ensures that you are only chatting with the right person.
What's more, you can now have a physical security key to sign into your Apple ID account. You can visit the Apple Support page for more information about iCloud data security.
So that's all for today, friends!
Advanced Data Protection for iCloud will roll out globally by the end of December 2022. So protect your sensitive iCloud data from hackers and data leaks. Also, take security measures to keep your Apple ID and iPhone safe and sound.
