How to Use Coarse Salt to Clean and Maintain Your Home?

Surely we all have a salt shaker that sits on our table or is stored in the spice cabinet. Salt enhances the taste of our food, certainly but not only. Did you know you can also use it to clean your house?

You may not know it, but salt (sodium chloride) has been used for cleaning since at least medieval times, and successive generations have continued to use it for all manner of crafty household work. Plus, it’s a great alternative to baking soda.

Eco-friendly and inexpensive, coarse salt has been shown to be effective in scrubbing surfaces, getting rid of dirt and removing other stubborn stains.   • Use coarse salt to clean lime stains

It is quite possible to treat lime stains by using salt. For this purpose, the combination of coarse salt and lemon is very effective. Thanks to the citric acid contained in the lemon, it attacks the limestone, while the coarse salt makes it easier to eliminate residues. A 100% guaranteed result! All you have to do is mix these two ingredients together, dip a sponge in the solution, and scrub the area in question with this winning duo before rinsing it off. In addition to acting as a disinfectant, this mixture will remove limescale and other hard-to-remove stains.

  • Create a homemade air freshener with coarse salt

Have you cooked fish and you find yourself with an unpleasant and persistent smell in your kitchen? Don’t worry, we have the solution! In a bowl, mix about 20 drops of essential oil of your choice with 150 g of coarse salt. Place the container in the desired place in your kitchen! Otherwise, you can insert the mixture into pouches and hang them in different places in your house! In addition to naturally deodorizing your home, coarse salt also absorbs moisture.

  • Clean and shine your silverware with coarse salt

Indeed, it is possible to clean tarnished silverware thanks to a very simple, homemade solution, the necessary ingredients of which are probably available in your kitchen cupboards.

To start, get a sheet of aluminum foil, which you will place in a plastic bowl (avoid any other metallic material). Add a handful of coarse salt to a pot of boiling water, then fill the bowl with hot salted water.

Gently place your silver object to be cleaned and bring it into contact with the aluminum foil. Just wait a few minutes to 1 hour (depending on the oxidation state of the silver), then rinse and dry with a cloth.

  • Clean the smelly washing machine with coarse salt

Salt is also beneficial for maintaining your washing machine. In addition to absorbing moisture, it also helps to overcome bad odors.

To do this, pour a handful of coarse salt and a liter of white vinegar directly into the drum. Then run your washing machine empty at 90°.
