These are the steps to unlock the Prismatic Recaster and the Umbral Decoder
- Head to Titan
- Speak with the Drifter (You may need to defeat the boss in the Gambit-style events first)
- Complete a Strike, Crucible or Gambit match to acquire the Prismatic Recaster
- Open up the Prismatic Recaster and upgrade it with Twisted Energy
- This grant you an Umbral Engram along with an Umbral Decoder
The only thing that can happen is that you don’t get it the first time from the drifter. So kill bosses in Gambit until you unlock it
What is the Prismatic Recaster for?
It is what you need to be able to open umbral engrams (along with the decoder threshold that you will get at the same time), since you cannot open them through either the Cryptarch or the Eververse
But also, if you raise the level of the Prismatic Recaster you will reduce the cost of the umbral engrams. So you can get more Umbral Engrams with Altered Element that you earn by completing Bounties from the Prismatic Recaster, or purchasing a Trade Override with legendary shards
After these steps, you will be able to focus your engram to choose the rewards that interest you, and you will increase the Umbral Research Rank. Of course, max the umbral research rank for the best rewards.

How to Level up the Prismatic Recaster?
Once you actually have Twisted Energy, go back to The Drifter and inspect the Prismatic Recaster. You will then be able to deposit your Twisted Energy into the machine to level it up
