What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the medical term for a ringing noise in the ears. Without any external source you can hear roaring, buzzing, whistling, and hissing sounds. These sounds are sometimes known as phantom sounds. It mainly affects about 15 to 20 percent of the population. Tinnitus is not a disease but is a symptom of various conditions such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury, or any circulatory system related disorder. It can also occur with depression, stress, and anxiety.
Types of tinnitus:
Tinnitus can be objective or subjective- In objective tinnitus, the voice can be heard by somebody examining the person means that both you and other people can hear certain noises in your ears. It happens due to the abnormal blood vessels in and around your ears.
In subjective tinnitus only you can hear the roaring, ringing, and other sounds and it is a much more common type.
What is the Ayurvedic view for Tinnitus?
Tinnitus in Ayurveda is known as “Karnanada” which is caused due to the imbalance of prana Vayu/ Prana Vayu is considered as a sub dosha of vata which is present in the head & maintain cerebral functioning.
What causes Tinnitus?
Permanent damage to the middle or inner ear- sensitive cells of the cochlea, a spiral-shaped organ in the inner ear causes tinnitus.
Damage to your eardrums in the middle ear can also interfere with the proper conduction of sound.
Tumors on the auditory nerve may also cause ringing sound in the ears. Regular exposure to very loud sounds can cause tinnitus in some people. The use of jackhammers, chainsaws, or other heavy equipment is more likely to cause tinnitus. Listening to loud music through headphones can produce temporary symptoms of tinnitus.
Prolonged use of medications can also cause tinnitus and hearing damage, which is called as ototoxicity. It includes:
Excessive doses of aspirin, such as more than 12 doses daily for a longer period
Prolonged use of diuretic medications, such as bumetanide, antimalarial drugs, such as chloroquine, antibiotics, such as erythromycin and gentamicin, anti-cancerous drugs, such as vincristine, etc.
Other medical conditions that can create ringing in your ears include:
- Age-related hearing loss
- Anemia
- Allergies
- An underactive thyroid gland
- Autoimmune diseases
- Diabetes
- Muscle spasms in the middle ear
- Meniere’s disease
- High blood pressure and cholesterol
- Head and neck injuries
- Blockages due to a build-up of wax
- Otosclerosis, it results in the stiffening of the small bones in the middle ear
- This condition can become worse, if they drink alcohol and caffeinated beverages, smoke cigarettes, etc.
What are the symptoms of Tinnitus?
The symptoms of tinnitus include various noises in the ears, such as ringing, roaring, buzzing, hissing, or whistling which may be intermittent or continuous.
The noise may vary in pitch from a low roar to a high squeal that may hear in one or both ears. It can also interfere with concentration or hear an external sound.
What is the Panchakarma Treatment for Tinnitus?

Shiroabhyanga: In this procedure, gently massage the head with medicated oil to calm the prana Vayu which is the main cause of tinnitus.
Gandush&Kawala: In Gandush keep medicated oil in the mouth for a certain period of time. In kawala, do gargles with medicated oil for strengthening the nerves of ears & eyes. It will balance the doshas in the body.
Nasya: The medicated oil is administered into the nostrils to balance the Prana Vayu in the upper body parts.
Karnapooran: In this procedure, warm medicated oil is administered dropwise in each ear which calms the Vatadosha. Remain this oil in one ear for five to ten minutes after that it is cleaned. This same procedure is done in the next ear.
