What is a Slipped Disc?
Our spinal column is made up of a series of vertebrae (bones) that are stacked onto each other. These vertebrae are covered by spinal discs that protect the bones from receiving shocks by daily activities like lifting, twisting, or walking.
The disc comprises a soft, gelatinous inner portion and a tough outer ring. When an injury occurs in the inner portion of the ring it causes the rupturing of the tissues that separate the vertebral bones, then the disc protrudes through the outer ring. This condition is referred to as herniated, or prolapsed disc. It can occur in any part of the spine and can irritate a nearby nerve. Depending upon the location, this can result in pain, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg. This is common in men than in women.
What causes a Slipped Disc?
The main cause of the slipped disc is not clear why some people develop a slipped disc and not others, even when they do the same job or lift the same sort of objects. This may be due to the weakness in the outer part of the affected disc. A slipped disc may also cause due to gradual, aging-related wear and tear called disc degeneration. As the age increases, the disc becomes less flexible and more prone to tearing or rupturing with even a minor strain.
Other causes that result in a slipped disc are:
- A job involving lots of lifting and sitting (especially driving).
- Weight-bearing sports (weight lifting, etc).
- Excessive smoking
- Being overweight or obesity
- Increasing age (a disc becomes weak as we become older)
Slipped disc can happen in any part of the spine, from neck to the lower back. But the most common area is lower back for slipped discs. The spinal column is a network of various nerves and blood vessels. During a slipped disc, the bones put extra pressure on the nerves and muscles around it.
