What is Leucoderma?
Leucoderma is also known as vitiligo or white leprosy. It is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system of the body attacks the healthy cells and starts affecting the body. It is characterized by the localization or destruction of melanocytes in the body which results in the formation of white patches on the skin. These cells produce the pigment melanin responsible for our skin color. The white patches appear when these cells die.
Major skin changes might become noticeable during the early stages of life –around the age of 10 to 30 years and are more noticeable in people with darker skin complexion. It occurs both in men and women equally.
What are the causes of leucoderma?
There are many causes of leucoderma such as:
Congenital causes:
- Tuberous sclerosis
- Partial albinism
- Waardenburg syndrome
- Naevus depigmentosus
Post-inflammatory:
- Thermal burns
- Dermatitis
- Psoriasis
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Lichen sclerosis
Immunological causes:
- Vitiligo
- Melanoma-associated leukoderma
Occupational/chemical:
- Exposure to depigmentation agents, such as phenol
- Leukoderma occurs on the direct exposure parts of the body, but other areas that are not directly in contact with chemicals can also be affected
- Depigmentation increases even after the patient is no longer in contact with the chemicals

What are the symptoms of Leucoderma?
The main symptom of leucoderma is associated with the development of white patches on the skin areas that are mainly exposed to sunlight including hands, arms, lips, face, etc.
It also leads to the development of gray eyelashes, gray beard, gray hair, discoloration of the mucosal membranes, and color changes of the retina in the eyes.
What is an Ayurvedic View of Leucoderma?
According to Ayurveda, Leucoderma can be compared with ‘’Shvet kushtha’’ which is caused due to the vitiation of pitta dosha in the body. This vitiated dosha leads to the accumulation of the ama (toxins) in the deep tissues of the body which leads to the development of leucoderma.
