How to Treat Fungal Infection through Ayurveda?

What is a Fungus?

A fungus is a type of microorganism that can range from tiny, barely visible specks that float around in the air to large growths like mushrooms. Fungi (the plural) are usually present all around us and they do not cause any problem. Sometimes they can settle down and grow in places where they shouldn’t like our skin, nails, between our toes, and, in women, it is commonly the vaginal area.

What is a Fungal Infection?

A fungal infection is a skin disease caused by a fungus and is also known as mycosis. These are found in the air, soil, water, and plants and some fungi that live naturally in the human body. In humans, it occurs when an invading fungus takes over the body area and the immune system is not able to handle it. Fungi can be helpful and harmful. When harmful fungi invade in a specific body part, it becomes difficult to kill, as they can survive in the environment and re-infect the person trying to get better.

These are mainly found in a warm and moist environment. Fungal skin infections develop in sweaty or damp areas that don’t get much airflow to include the feet, groin, and folds of skin. It is mostly spread through direct contact with fungi on clothing or other items, or on a person or animal.

Types of fungal infection are:

Athlete’s foot: It is a condition in which tiny growth of fungi in between toes that makes the skin really itchy and sore.

In older people, there is the development of an itchy fungal infection in the skin on thighs, and in women, it develops under the breasts.

Most of them also suffer from ringworm which is a dry, slightly red circle of itchy skin that develops on leg or arm, or occasionally the scalp.

The symptoms of a fungal infection may vary and will depend on the type and on what part of the body is affected, but common symptoms include:

  • Irritation
  • Scaly skin
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Blisters
  • Red and possibly cracking or peeling skin
  • Infection in the vaginal area usually causes itching and foul discharge from the vagina.
  • Infection in the lungs can cause coughing, chest pain, fever, and muscle aches.
