Blonde hair and cholorine are not best friends, not even close. Now you need to spend some time in a pool or spa for your hair to go green, but if you’re going on a holiday and don’t want to have to worry about it here are some tips from my trusty hairdresser Karleigh of Anthony Nitson Hair about how to stop your hair going green.
How to Stop Blonde Hair Going Green in the Swimming Pool or Spa
- Use a sealant such as Kerastase Aqua Seal before swimming. Apply by spraying it into your hands and rubing through your hair (around 6 sprays into your hands, then comb through with fingers). This becomes a swimming cap for your hair to protect it from chlorine and pool/spa chemicals.
- If you don’t have a product like the Aqua Seal, then use a leave in conditioner or even coconut oil and wear a swimming cap over the top (as this is not good for the chemical balance of the swimming pool).
- After swimming make sure you wash your hair (don’t sleep with the cholorine in your hair as the green can still happen!). If you’ve used the Aqua Seal use Kerastase Soleil shampoo to wash out the product

How to Fix Blonde Hair that Has Gone Green in the Swimming Pool
- Ideally visit your hairdresser. If you can’t manage that buy Malibu C Crystal Gel from a hairdressing supplier which will remove the build up of products and discolouration from swimming.
- Shampoo hair and towel dry (do not apply conditioner). Apply the Malibu C Crystal Gel to your hair and comb through, then wrap your head in cling film and then a towel to help the product work (it likes to be warm). leave on your hair for 30 minutes before washing out.
- If the chemical remover doesn’t work then you will need a bleach bath (at your hairdresser). Do not attempt this at home! Do not apply a darker dye over the top of your green hair as it will make the color look murky. You need to remove the green before you dye your hair!
