Most kinds of grass can survive easily in long periods of drought. That is why there is a need to inspect whether the lawn is dead/dormant or survived.
Ways to save a drought-stricken lawn
You can do it by checking at the soil level because sometimes the leaves turn brown but the grass at the base remains green and the color of the roots remains healthy off-white. This condition shows that your lawn has survived. If you see that your lawn is completely brown and brittle including tips of the grass, crowns, leaves, and roots this means that your lawn is suffering from drought.
Spiking
Watering your lawn is the first step that you can take to recover the dead and dried soil. There are so many ways to get the water deep inside the roots of the grass, and the most effective method is spiking. You can pin your lawn by using various tools like aerator shoes, aerator sticks, etc.
A layer called thatch is formed between the soil and grass and is made up of dried leaves and debris. This layer does not let the water reach deep inside. To make it reach down there is a need for aeration/spiking. It makes tiny holes in the ground and lets the water and essential nutrients reach down easily. Remember to target the areas that are more affected and dried because sometimes all the areas of your lawn are not dead.
The benefit of spiking the drought-stricken lawn is that water runs deep inside the roots and let the roots know that they have to grow down to search for water. By this, roots will make their place deep down in the soil and become more firm and strong to survive in the hot summer days and remain safe from damage.
Fertilizing
After recovery from any sickness, a human body requires an energy boost for upbringing the lost energy due to illness. So, we use supplements to overcome the problem. Similarly, when a lawn has suffered from the drought, it also requires a quick energy boost in the form of fertilization.
Always choose fertilizers that contain nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen helps in better growth of the plants, phosphorus strengthens up the roots deep inside the soil of the lawn, and potassium will help your lawn soil to fight against various diseases of the lawn. Remember, that damaged and stressed grass is very sensitive and likely to have diseases.
