How to Reuse an Old Vase

By Simon Crowther @prestigeflower

We all have at least one old vase hidden in the back of a cupboard that we rarely visit. Whether this vase is just old or slightly damaged, it's a shame to let it go to waste. So, take it out, give it a good clean and consider these ideas on how to reuse an old vase.

Pencil and pen holder

If you are like so many people out there, your pens and pencils are most likely scattered throughout your home. A strategically placed holder can solve this problem. This is one of the most practical ways to reuse an old vase because it doesn't take much time or effort. Plus, it makes your life easier.

Kitchen utensils

If your kitchen utensils like your whisk and serving spoons are cluttering up your drawer space or kitchen worktops, you need a place to store them. In your kitchen, practical solutions are essential. You can reuse an old vase as a utensil holder. Place all of your extra utensils inside and place the vase in a convenient spot in your kitchen.

Terrarium

Vases are not only for cut flowers. You can reuse an old vase to create your very own terrarium! Remember, round fishbowl style vases are best for this design. You will also need the appropriate potting soil and succulents or cacti to create this long-lasting display.

Spare change

Are you tired of your spare change ending up on just about every table or surface in your home? Place a vase near the entrance hall or in your living room and use it for all those coins. Not only is this a great solution to a common problem, but it looks really nice too. Especially when the vase starts to fill up.

Candle holder

Depending on the size and shape of your vase, you could use it as a candle holder. Make sure that the candle you use inside the vase is not too large either. In many cases, cylindrical vases are best and tea candles are ideal.

Photo frame

If your vase has flat surfaces all around, you can use it as a photo frame. To reuse an old vase to hold photos, you should crop the photo according to the size you need before inserting it inside the vase. You can still fill the vase with flowers or other decorative items like dyed feathers if you like. Just remember that silk flowers are best because they don't require water.

Bookends

If you need to keep your book collection from falling over, you can make a lovely bookend using a vase. Again, you can fill the vase with flowers or other decorative items based on your preferences. If you want to weigh the vase down, add some pebbles, stones or even sand to it.

These are just some of the best ways to reuse an old vase in your home. These ideas are great for making the most of the vase and improving your environment all in one! If the vase is damaged at all, remember that there's nothing a ribbon or other accessory can't fix!
