Red Wine is a trendy drink for most of us. At parties, with dinner or maybe just trying to unwind at the end of a tough, long day at the office. Nine times out of 10, a glass of red wine is enjoyed.
And 9 out of 10 of us had experienced that heart-stopping moment when that knocked, or Dropped glass topples and fell onto our beautiful, clean, cream carpet, rug, or sofa. The panic to scramble for paper towels begins. However, this is not always enough to stop the spill from leaving a nasty red patch of disappointment.
So before I begin telling you that you can all remove this horrible Bright stain yourselves without the need to call in the professionals, let’s try to understand why Red Wine stains our carpets and Upholstery so easily,
Red wine is, in fact, mostly made from water, but as you can taste it, it has many other ingredients in it to make it so tasty. Because Red Wine is made with Red/ Black Grapes, this is where the bright red colouring comes from. This is what causes the stains on your carpets, but the tannins in the Red Wine aid in its ability to stain fabrics and fibres quickly.
Like many other stains, attending to the color as quickly as possible is essential. Leaving the stain for another day will only allow the liquid to penetrate and fix onto the deeper fibres of the carpet, making it considerably harder to remove.
So, one way to remove Red Wine from your carpet
You will need the following:
- Clean Cloths
- Cold Water
- Baking Soda
- Vacuum
Begin by blotting up as much of the spill as possible with your Clean Cloths, be sure to use more than one cloth if necessary. If you blot with a Wine soaked cloth, it may cause spreading, and you will end up with a large area to be treated.
Once you have finished blotting the stain, pour cold water onto the stained area (not too much). This will dilute the stain allowing you to continue blotting the area, thus removing more of the Wine.
Next, mix up a paste of Baking Soda and water. A ratio of 3 to 1 is a perfect consistency. Apply this paste onto the stained area and allow it to dry completely.
Once the paste is dry, vacuum it up, and reveal a stain-free carpet.
A second method for removing Red Wine
You will need the following:
- Clean Cloths
- Warm Water
- White Vinegar
- Washing Up Liquid
- A Sponge
Like the previously mentioned method, the first step is to Blot up as much of the spilt Wine as quickly as possible. Once you are happy that it has all been blotted up, create a mixture of 2 cups of Warm Water, 1 Tablespoon of White Vinegar and one tablespoon of Washing Up Liquid (one that doesn’t contain Bleach). Dip into the mixture using your sponge and apply directly to the stain.
Always blot. Do NOT rub, as you will risk the stain spreading. Continue Blotting the area until the Red Wine stain has been completely lifted.
Lastly, allow the area to dry completely before walking on the area. Walking in a damp area can cause further soiling.
And that’s a safe, effective way to remove that dreaded Red Wine stain from your precious carpets yourself.
