How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree

How to recycle your Christmas tree

If you choose a fresh Christmas tree this holiday season, you might not know what to do with them once the holidays are over. Fortunately, there are a number of great uses for your old tree and you don't have to feel guilty about simply discarding the tree.

Make mulch

If you have a wood chipper, you can run your Christmas tree through it and use the mulch to feed and protect your garden. This is a great way of putting your tree to good use and you won't waste a bit!

Create a bird feeder

You can turn an old Christmas tree into a natural bird feeder that will fit right into your garden and it will not stick out like a sore thumb. You will need to prepare by cleaning the tree up and removing excess branches and foliage. Drill a few holes in the trunk and make sure that you drill them close to an adjacent branch. Now fill these holes with seeds, nuts or even peanut butter. This will help attract various birds to your garden. Remember to secure your tree so that it does not fall over. Remember, since it is still winter, you will be making plenty of critters happy with an easy-to-reach food.

DIY crafts

There are plenty of crafts that call for thin branches and tree trunk slices. Depending on the size of your Christmas tree, you can cut several slices of the trunk and use them to make things like coasters and place mats. You can even personalise them by transferring images or photos to the wood.

Make a path

If you have a relatively large tree, you can cut slices of the trunk and use them to create a pathway in your garden. Not only is the a practical use for your tree, but it is also beautiful and you will enjoy a truly natural design.

Fire fuel

If you really have no other use for your Christmas tree, your fireplace could always use a bit of extra fuel to help keep your home comfortably warm this winter. Of course, this should only be done if you really have no other way of putting your old tree to good use.

Remember, even if you feel like you don't have much use for your old Christmas tree, one of your neighbours just might. Don't be afraid to ask around and you should quickly find out which of your neighbours is big on recycling and reusing!
