Old photos and videos can be archived from any device signed in to your Google account. Some of the categories used to classify files on Google Photos include faces, places, time, and other available album options.

Interestingly, photos and videos deleted from the Google Photos app are sent to the Trash folder and remain there for up to 60 days and can be restored. After the 60 days lapses, such files are deleted from the device if they aren't restored.

However, you can still recover files that are no longer on your device if the backup and sync feature has been enabled on your Google Photos app.

Deleted photos and video remain in the app's Trash folder until it is either restored or deleted permanently. If no action was taken on such deleted pictures or video files, the app automatically erased them.

To restore a deleted photo or video, you need to look into the Trash folder. If it has been deleted and moved to Trash for over 60 days, or you have deleted it permanently, then it can't be restored.

Otherwise, you need to back up the deleted file to reaccess it.

How to Restore files from Google Photos on Android

  1. Launch the Google Photos app on your device and tap Library from the bottom right of your screen.
  2. Next, go to the Trash folder, which can be seen from the top, alongside Favourite, Utilities and Archive.
  3. Locate the deleted photo or video, tap and hold to select multiple files if you need to restore many files.
  4. From the bottom, tap the Restore option, and the deleted file will be restored to its original folder in the app.

How to Restore files from Google Photos on Android

  1. On your PC, open your favourite web browser and visit photos.google.com. Ensure you sign in using the same Gmail address on your Google Photos app.
  2. To the left side of the window is the Trash folder. Click on it.
  3. Select the photo or video you want to restore and click Restore.

The file will be recovered and sent to your Google Photos account, and you will be able to see it in the original folder in your Google Photos app.

Remember that recovering photos and videos from the Google Photos app can be done from the trash folder. Every deleted content stays in the Trash for up to 60 days before they get automatically deleted from the device. Also, if the backup is turned on, lost files can still be recovered.
