Do you ever feel like your wardrobe is a jumble of pieces that don’t quite come together? If you’re struggling to style your clothes into outfits that make you feel confident, you’re not alone. Many of us find ourselves asking the same question: how do I create looks that resonate with my personality while still fitting the occasion? Let’s dive into some strategies to help you craft outfits that not only look great but also make you feel amazing.

Understanding Your Style Recipe

The journey to confident dressing starts with understanding your unique style. Just as every person has different tastes, every wardrobe should reflect individuality. To kickstart this process, think about your style recipe.

This concept involves three critical elements: how you want to be perceived, what makes you feel good, and the styles that reflect your personality.

  • Perception – Ask yourself, “How do I want others to see me?” Do you want to come across as approachable, authoritative, or creative (or something else completely – this is up to you)? Your outfit can communicate these attributes effectively.  Not sure what your outfits are saying?  Think about how characters in movies and TV shows wear costumes, what kind of costume would your “character” wear?  Scroll through Pinterest using a few words on how you want to be perceived, and notice if those outfits say that to you or not.  Notice the elements of design, the kinds of garments, the fabrics, prints, construction and details in the ones that you feel resonate with your style recipe and how you want to be perceived.  Look at the ones that you know that “just aren’t you” and notice the differences, what makes these ones a “no” whilst the others are a yes”?
  • Feeling Good – Think about what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Is it a certain silhouette, fabric, or colour? Understanding what resonates with you can guide your outfit choices.  How do you like your clothing to feel on?  How much does needing to move matter? How about a feeling of freedom?  How about feeling approachable or feeling appropriate?  What makes you feel good in your clothing?
  • Personal Expression – Consider how your clothes reflect your personality. Jot down adjectives that describe how you want to feel in your clothes. Whether it’s elegant, casual, edgy,  feminine, professional, smart, mysterious or innovative (there is no right or wrong here), having a clear vision will guide your outfit choices. Your unique style should tell your story, so don’t be afraid to let your individuality shine through.

Fashion vs. Style: What’s the Difference?

To understand how to build your wardrobe effectively, it helps to distinguish between fashion and style. Fashion is the ever-changing world of trends, while Style is your personal expression. Think of fashion as a hammer—great for creating, but you can’t live in it. Style is your home; it’s where you reside and reflect who you are. Incorporate your unique preferences, colour palette, and body shape into your style house for a cohesive look.

Principles of Coordination: The Art of Outfit Building

When styling your outfits, understanding the principles of coordination can make a significant difference.

  • Balance Volume –  If you choose a voluminous garment, pair it with something fitted to avoid overwhelming your figure. For example, if you wear wide-leg pants, opt for a more fitted top to create balance. Or alternatively, a voluminous oversized top (like my jumper below) needs a more fitted bottom.

  • Related Shapes – Combining shapes that work well together enhances the overall aesthetic. This principle ensures your outfit feels cohesive and thoughtfully put together. Relate the shapes in your outfits - curves wuith curves

Notice the curved sleeves relate to the curved hem (and the curved flower brooch)

  • Proportions Matter – Pay attention to proportions in your outfit. This can make a big difference in how you feel in your clothes. For instance, a longer bottom paired with shorter top  (or longer top with shorter bottom) creates a harmonious proportional combination.

Expressing Your Personality

Ultimately, your outfit should be an expression of your personality. When you wear something that aligns with who you are on the inside, it radiates confidence. Have you ever tried to replicate a stylish look you saw on someone else, only to feel uncomfortable? This often happens because the outfit doesn’t resonate with your true self. Start with what you already own. Try mixing and matching items in your wardrobe. Sometimes, unexpected combinations create the best looks. Dedicate a few hours to a wardrobe session where you can try on various outfits and document the ones you love. A quick photo can help you remember which combinations made you feel fabulous.

If you feel stuck, consider professional guidance. My online program, 7 Steps to Style, offers valuable insights into understanding your body shape, colour palette, and personal style. It’s a fantastic way to gain the knowledge and confidence to put together outfits that make you feel your best.

Remember, it’s all about expressing who you are through your clothing. So, take that first step today, and let your wardrobe be a reflection of your vibrant personality. You’ve got this!
