To preserve the hygiene of your foam mattress, cleaning from time to time is often recommended. The problem is that we don't always know how to go about it in the face of the magnitude of the task. In this article, you will find our step-by-step recommendations on how to properly clean a foam mattress.

The Necessary Equipment For Cleaning

Depending on the method used, you will need more or less equipment to clean your foam mattress. Above all, make sure to take a look at the manufacturer's recommendations to avoid any mistakes. Generally, you will have the choice between dry cleaning or wet cleaning.

For Dry Cleaning, You'll Need:

  • A handheld vacuum cleaner with a soft brush (or a conventional vacuum cleaner with a soft brush tip)
  • A sticky roll
  • A soft brush

For wet cleaning, you'll need:

  • A basin
  • A clean cloth
  • A sprayer
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar

In order to choose the right method, check if your foam mattress has a composition that can withstand washing with water. If not, or you're not sure of the answer, dry clean instead.

Steps To Dry Clean Your Foam Mattress

To find out how to clean a foam mattress without using water, simply follow these recommendations:

Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush tip to go over the mattress. Do not rub too much with the tip as this can damage the foam or the shell of your mattress. Carefully sweep over the entire surface to remove dust.

Complete this cleaning if necessary by running a soft brush over the areas with embedded dirt as well as the sticky roller to remove what remains on the surface.

It should be noted that dry cleaning your mattress essentially removes dust, hair or pet hair. However, this method will not allow you to remove stains or bad odors. For the latter problems, wet cleaning should be preferred.

Steps To A Wet Cleaning Of Your Foam Mattress

If dry cleaning is insufficient or you need to remove stains and bad odors, you can opt for wet cleaning. In any case, the use of the vacuum cleaner in the first step is essential. Then, all you have to do is choose the method that suits your mattress.

The White Vinegar Method

White vinegar is an excellent ally for the household in general. Natural, it can be used for mattress cleaning for the whole family. It is also very easy to use.

All you have to do is make a mixture of water and white vinegar in a sprayer. Then spray this mixture over the entire mattress without soaking it too much either. The vinegar will help to sanitize the foam and the envelope. All you have to do is let it dry. If you find the smell of white vinegar heady, don't worry, it disappears completely after a few hours.

The Baking Soda And White Vinegar Method

For a slightly more effective, but also more tedious cleaning, you can opt for a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar. Use these two ingredients diluted in water and soak a clean cloth with them. Then you just have to dab the mattress so that it soaks up the mixture. Be careful not to soak it either to avoid creating too much moisture.

Prefer To Do This Cleaning Outdoors For More Practicality And Faster Drying.

Drying

Once your wet cleaning is done, you will move on to the drying stage. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out wet cleaning outdoors and in summer. Your mattress will be able to dry faster thanks to the hot air. So choose a nice sunny day to do this. Check that your mattress is completely dry before reinstalling it on your box spring.

What's more, be careful not to clean your mattress during pollen season. Otherwise, it may settle on the mattress and be responsible for allergies.

Deodorize And Disinfect Your Foam Mattress

Between two cleanings or precisely to complete the complete washing of your mattress, there are also methods to deodorize and disinfect your foam mattress.

Deodorizing A Foam Mattress

With humidity or the presence of mold, the mattress may take on an unpleasant smell despite daily ventilation of the room. If your mattress is too wet, you will need to find the source of the problem. In the meantime, you can at least deodorize it.

To do this, simply sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface of the folding mattress. In order to carry out this step more easily, you can use a strainer or a sieve to sprinkle the baking soda more easily.

Leave everything on for 30 to 45 minutes, then all you have to do is vacuum your folding mattress to remove the baking soda.

Disinfecting A Foam Mattress

To disinfect a foam mattress, a very simple solution is to install it in direct sunlight and let the UV rays do their work.

You can also use tea tree essential oil, which is known for its disinfectant properties. You can dilute a few drops in a liter of water and spray it all on the surface of your folding mattress. You can also use an essential oil diffuse to purify the room in a global way.

Be careful, however, some essential oils are not recommended for children, animals and pregnant women. So be sure to check with your doctor before use.

How Often Should A Foam Mattress Be Cleaned?

To keep your foam mattress clean and healthy, it is useful to clean it regularly enough, but not too much either at the risk of damaging it prematurely. We therefore recommend:

  • Vacuum once or twice a month to remove dust, dust mites and other dirt.
  • Deep cleaning and disinfection once or twice a year.
  • A spot cleaning in case of a stain, it is better to intervene immediately.
