Mastering the Basics: Controls and Movement
Before you can tackle the roaming monsters, you need to understand how to pilot your character. LORT uses a familiar control scheme, but the way you combine these inputs dictates your true speed and efficiency.
- Movement: Use the WASD keys to move your character.
- Camera: Move your mouse to control the camera angle.
- Inventory: Press the 1, 2, 3, and 4 number keys to select items on your hotbar.
- Combat: Click the Left Mouse Button (LMB) for your primary attack. Click the Right Mouse Button (RMB) for your alternate fire.
- Mobility: Press the Spacebar to jump and use the Left Control key (LControl) to dodge.
- Skills: Press the Q and E keys to activate your character’s specific skills.
Advanced Movement Tech:
A common trap new players fall into is believing the game feels slow. Walking speed alone resembles crawling through sinking sand. However, LORT features fantastic hidden movement tech. You will race across the map incredibly fast once you master one simple trick: the air dodge.
By pressing your dodge key (LControl) while in the air, you gain a massive burst of momentum. When you combine this air dodge with environmental mobility aids, you cover huge distances in the blink of an eye. You will quickly become a believer in this movement system.
Weapon Strategy:
As a beginner, do not worry about maximizing your combat effectiveness immediately. Learning what each weapon does is much more important than mastering it right away. Experiment with any and all weapons you come across. Find the primary and alternate fire modes that feel right for your personal playstyle.

Pro Tip: Do not rely on your base walking speed. Make use of the Dodge skill while in the air, and combine that air dodge with other movement tech like sunflowers to race across the map incredibly fast.
Your First Mission: Camps, Trials, and the Clock
Your very first mission clearly outlines the core gameplay loop of LORT. You must clear three Camps and three Trials of Gold, while facing a strict time limit. You have exactly three in-game days to complete these objectives, find the boss, and defeat them.
Clearing Camps:
Camps are enemy strongholds inhabited by goblins, slimes, and bees. You will easily spot these structures from a distance by looking for floating, colorful attribute lights (red, green, and blue) hovering about 15 feet in the air.
These lights float directly above a central totem. To conquer the camp, you must defeat all the monsters originating from it. Once you defeat every camp enemy, the central totem shatters. You can then absorb the floating boon to permanently increase your character’s attribute.
Conquering Trials of Gold:
The Trials of Gold operate differently than the monster camps. These are standalone totems marked by floating skulls. The number of skulls directly indicates the challenge level. One skull represents the easiest difficulty, while three skulls represent the hardest challenge. You earn significantly more gold by tackling the harder trials, so weigh your confidence against your need for currency.

Pro Tip: Having trouble finding the last enemy in a camp? Get close enough to the central totem and look for small spectral hands; they will point directly to the still-living monsters protecting the camp.
Navigating the Map: Points of Interest
LORT intentionally omits a map or mini-map. The developers designed the game to test your sense of direction and your ability to wayfind to key objectives. You must build mental maps and track POIs manually.
Pay attention to what traversal methods work best for you, and keep a sharp eye out for the following distinct environmental features:
Environmental features
- Barrels and Crates: These are standard breakable objects. Smash them to find a gold piece or other random helpful things.
- Chests: These valuable containers hold random power-ups. However, opening them requires you to spend the specific amount of gold listed on the chest. Make sure you open them early because the gold price steadily increases as the in-game days pass.
- Giant Sunflowers: These massive plants serve as incredible mobility aids. Simply run directly into a sunflower, and it will rapidly propel you high into the air in that direction. Combine this with the air dodge technique for maximum speed.
- Markets: Look for merchants set up in tents. These vendors sell new power-ups and allow you to exchange your current power-ups for different ones. Take the time to experiment with the merchant systems to see what setups work for you.
- The Boss Summoning Area: Once you successfully complete your quest of clearing three camps and three trials, the boss area becomes visible on the compass located at the top of your Heads Up Display (HUD). Beware, you can accidentally run into the boss summoning area early while exploring!
- The Van: This vehicle is your ride out and the exact same way you got in. When you finally defeat the boss, you must immediately book it back to the van to escape. Always make a firm mental note of the van’s location if you happen to run past it during your mission.
- Giant Shovel: A massive, curious landmark on the map. Go check it out and explore the area around it!

Pro Tip: Chest prices increase as the days pass in game, so spend your gold early. Also, since you must book it back to the Van after defeating the boss, always make a mental note of where you saw it while traversing the map.
Characters and Progression: Collecting Attributes
Success in LORT relies heavily on stacking the right powers for the right character. As you explore and defeat camps, you will collect Attributes, Power-Ups, and Items.
The Three Characters:
Your primary goal is to collect as many Attributes that match your character’s specific primary color as possible. Hitting a total of 10 matching attributes before facing the boss gives you a very strong chance of winning the fight. Do not feel disheartened if you fail to reach 10 attributes in your first few runs. Map traversal takes practice, and traversing effectively is the key part of acquiring Attributes.
Choose your playstyle from the following roster:
- Astrid (Melee): Focus entirely on gathering Red attributes.
- Cliff (Range): Focus entirely on gathering Green attributes.
- Bernie (Magic): Focus entirely on gathering Blue attributes.
Power-Ups and Items:
Power-ups are accessories and trinkets that add exciting new features to your gameplay. The good news is that there are generally no bad options when it comes to accessories. Grab what you can to enhance your character.
Items primarily refer to the weapons that occupy your four hotbar inventory slots. Every weapon type features a primary fire and a secondary fire. Occasionally, you will discover a weapon that has an attached power-up. You gain the benefit of that specific power-up only while the weapon remains in your inventory.

Pro Tip: When swapping weapons in your hotbar, be careful! If a weapon you find has an associated power-up attached to it, leaving that weapon behind means you will completely lose the benefit of that power-up.
Community Survival Guide: Health and Penalties
Big shoutout to the LORT Steam Community for these tips. Veteran players note that managing your health is the absolute biggest limiting factor during your initial runs. You must approach combat carefully because healing resources are scarce.
Finding Health:
You will only find around two or three health fountains on the entire first map. Because these fountains are so rare, taking unnecessary damage from monsters like snipers will end your run quickly.
Upgrades and Passives:
Thankfully, you can improve your survival odds between runs. Visit the Rune Juice Guy located in the hub area. You can purchase a permanent upgrade from him that increases the total number of health shrines that spawn in the world. Additionally, keep an eye out for specific passive power-ups during your runs that automatically give your health back. As you find your combat rhythm and learn enemy attack patterns, you will eventually reach a point where you hardly need to touch health shrines until the final stage before the final boss. You might only use them to top off your health after taking a couple of hits from snipers.
The Death Penalty:
Multiplayer groups face a severe punishment for failing. If you die while playing in a group, your maximum health decreases. Playing with less and less HP makes the game very unenjoyable in longer runs with people. Currently, there is no known way to restore this lost maximum health penalty. If you choose to play strictly solo, dying simply means the end of the run entirely.

Pro Tip: Health fountains are extremely limited on the first map. To counter this, visit the Rune Juice Guy in the hub to purchase the ability for more health shrines to spawn, or pick up passives during your runs that give health back.
Conclusion
Surviving the challenging map of LORT requires a sharp sense of direction, smart resource management, and a willingness to learn from every single run. This guide has provided the foundational knowledge you need to overcome the steep early learning curve and stop losing unnecessary health to basic enemies. As long as you master your air dodges and aggressively hunt down your primary attributes, you will easily keep pace with the ticking clock. Armed with these survival strategies, you are fully prepared to conquer the monster camps and secure your ride out in the van.

Fun Fact: LORT is the debut project from Big Distraction, an indie studio founded by industry veterans who previously worked on massive multiplayer hits like Fortnite and Rocket League.
