Posted on the 03 April 2019 by Steve Hanson @flooring365

Imagine walking through each room in your house. The beautiful furniture that you carefully searched for and gathered over the years. The wonderful pictures of all your family and friends hanging up on the walls and sitting atop your wooden tables. The pets and children running, playing and having fun. Everything is looking perfect. Or so you thought.

Suddenly, you look down at what you are standing on…

The flooring.

It’s hideous! It doesn’t match your furniture at all!

But don’t worry, we have all been there. We understand that flooring is an essential part of your home that isn’t just there for practical purposes. In this day and age, there are so many different types of flooring that have all sorts of different designs. That’s why it’s important to find the right flooring that matches the design of your home and all the furniture inside it. Read on to find out 4 tips and tricks on how to find flooring that best matches your home design!

          1) The smaller the wood, the bigger the room!

It’s said that having lots of mirrors in small rooms helps to make the room seem bigger and opens it up more. Obviously, we both know mirrors don’t make the room bigger physically, it’s just perception. But like mirrors, flooring can also make the room look bigger too.

It all depends on the cut of the planks. If you want your very small rooms to feel bigger then it’s best to have very small planks of wood fitted. Wider planks tend to shrink the room and they are also a lot more visible no matter the furniture you have in the room. Whereas narrow boards help to expand the room and won’t look like it is trying to compete with other décor.

Another brilliant trick for small rooms is to have the small wooden planks set at an angle like parquet wood flooring. This makes the eye feel like it must travel more thus making the entire room seem larger.

          2) Wood of the past!

Having all your wood furniture and flooring to match is a relic of a time that used to be. Matching wood is boring, it’s good to mix and match the colouring of your wood flooring to your wood furniture.

Instead, you could try changing the tones slightly. For example, you have a dark oak table in your dining room but you’re not sure what to do with your flooring. Do you just match it so it’s the same? No. You should go with a flooring that is a few tones lighter than your furniture. Darker furniture makes the overall feel of the room seem darker, so lighter flooring helps to brighten up the room and vice versa. Always remember that the colours should feel balanced.

          3) The dark side of the room!

Dark flooring in a room with barely any natural light is going to swallow up the rest of the room and all the furniture with it. If you do decide to go with a dark floor when you have fairly dark furniture always remember to bring décor in that looks lighter.

A good thing to have on dark wooden floors is a light rug. You don’t want your room disappearing into a deep shadow so start by placing a light-coloured rug on the floor. Every single piece of lighter décor will act like stars in the sky, easy to see but doesn’t take away from the darker colours either.

          4) Rustic vs modern!

Different people have different tastes when it comes to how old they want their floor looking. Rustic looks great inside an old cottage with wooden furniture whereas modern flooring looks better in contemporary houses. It’s all a matter of taste.

Modern flooring is more consistent across all the planks, if you want a modern look for your flooring then generally engineered, laminate or vinyl is the way to go. Lots of people love it when their flooring oozes with shine, that’s why a lot of engineered flooring is lacquered. Lacquered flooring looks great when you have a lot of natural light in the room. The shininess of the floor lights up the room and really makes all your décor stand out. However, not everyone likes shiny floors so you can just go with a non-lacquered version as well.

Rustic flooring is traditionally solid wood or parquet. A lot of older houses will tend to have these types of flooring if they haven’t been updated since they were first built. So, if you have a lot of wooden furniture or you prefer your house to have a more rustic feel to it, then solid wood or parquet would be the best type of flooring for you.
