How To Perfectly Execute The “Angle To The Hole” Strategy [VIDEO TIP]

Hey, everyone! A couple of weeks ago, I talked about what you should do if you are pulled out wide when your opponent hits an angled shot to the "hole", so this week, I decided to talk about what you should do to create that "angle to the hole" yourself, and force your opponent out wide.

This video shows a perfect execution of the angle to the hole strategy. The receiver hits a strong cross-court return, pulling the server off the court. She then follows her shot in and applies immediate pressure on the opponents. Her partner at the net also follows the ball out wide to cover her line, and when she sees the cross-court shot, she takes a step diagonally toward the ball and hits a solid volley to the hole.

A couple of things to note in this scenario (when the opponent is hitting cross-court to the deuce side):

  • unless the receiver has a solid and consistent backhand, it's better for the partner at net to take the ball and use her forehand to volley to the hole.
  • if the opponent hits a hard, fast cross-court ball, then it might be better for the receiver takes it since she'll have a little more time to react than her partner. In this case, the receiver should aim for the opponent at net because that player will be much closer to the ball and have very little time to react, and therefore will be more likely to make the error.

As always, my goal is to give all of you the tips and tools you need to be the best tennis players you can be, so if you need help with your game, DON'T BE SHY!
