How to Make an Exotic Bouquet Yourself

How to make an exotic bouquet yourself

Exotic blooms are usually more expensive that some other flowers such as roses and carnations. This is mostly because exotic flowers require some extra care when they are cultivated. Exotic flowers are a fabulous sight to behold which is why many flower lovers agree that the effort and spending a bit extra is certainly worth it. Exotic blooms are often taller, larger, and they are some of the brightest flowers in the world. If you are not sure how to create the perfect exotic arrangement, here are some essential tips.

Planning is the first step to any bouquet and exotic flowers are no exception. You will need to select the right flowers as well as foliage. You may follow the rest of these steps closely at first but, once you have a bit of practice, you will become even more confident and you may even enjoy experimenting with new ideas.

Flower selection

There are many wonderful options from which to choose. Some of the top choices include lotuses, helicoia, ginger flowers, orchids, and the stunning bird of paradise flower. Make sure that you always choose flowers that are bright and bold so that your bouquet stands out.

Foliage selection

After choosing your flowers, you will need to choose the right foliage. Some flower arrangements don't require much greenery and there are even some that can do without foliage. Exotic arrangements, however, should have some lush leaves for that rich touch of green. Some examples include Whaleback Palm leaves, palms, Phormium variegated or Phormium dark red leaves.

Find the right vase

Now that you have chosen your flowers and foliage, it's time to find the perfect vase. The length of the stems will help you select the right size vase. The longer the stems, the taller the vase needs to be in order to offer proper support. If the flowers are large, you don't want to trim the stems too short or your arrangement can end up looking a bit odd. If you prefer, you could use floral foam but you need to make sure that you have enough flowers and greenery to conceal the foam.

  • Before you begin, make sure that you put your flowers and foliage in fresh water while you prepare the foam or vase.
  • If you want to use floral foam, you will need to soak the foam in fresh water until it is saturated.
  • You then need to place the foam on a plastic tray so that it does not wet the table and to make the arrangement easier to move.
  • Trim the stems just before placing them in the vase or foam. This way, you can trim them to the perfect length based on where they will be set in the arrangement. For example, the central flowers are bound to be taller which means that the surrounding flowers will have shorter stems. The flowers around the edge will have the shortest stems of all.
  • The largest flowers will be your focal flowers and your smaller blooms are mass and filler flowers. Make sure that you leave space in between for the foliage. Also, you should add foliage around the base of the arrangement to hide the plastic tray.
  • Remember to trim the stems at an angle so that they can absorb water easily.
  • Trim the excess leaves so that they don't overcrowd the arrangement.
  • Once your flowers are in place, you can add some foliage in between to fill in any gaps.
  • Keep your flowers hydrated. Vase water needs to be changed every few days. Foam needs to be rehydrated when it starts to become dry.
