Monochromatic, meaning one colour (read up on the definition here), outfits can look extremely sophisticated and gorgeous, or if you're not careful, a little boring and plain. So how do you ensure that your monochromatic outfits are stylish and sophisticated not dull?
Jill Chivers of Shop Your Wardrobe and I discuss ways to put together great monochromatic outfits so that you look super stylish.
Tips on Making Your Monochromatic Outfits Look Fabulous
- Mix textures and fabric weights and density
- Wear lighter and darker shades of the same colour (it doesn't have to be exactly the same head to toe)
- Ensure they are in your right value contrast
- Wear it in a pattern which adds interest
Monochromatic Outfit Examples
In this navy outfit, the interest comes from the mix of the light floaty chiffon with the opaque heavier skirt fabric. Adding a slightly different shade of blue in my bracelet and necklace makes the outfit feel more colourful than it really is.
Here in shades of brown the interest comes from the embossed skirt pattern, the 3 different shades of brown (which create a value contrast that works for me) plus the additional textural element of the multi-strand rose gold necklace.
By mixing patterns in and adding in those patterned elements, this outfit goes from boring grey to something more interesting and unique.
In this all white outfit I've mixed two different textures in the lace and the cutout fabrics.
And of course monochromatic outfits don't have to be in neutrals. Here is a blue monochromatic scheme that mixes both patterns, shades of blue and textures too to add life and interest.
Hopefully you can see that monochromatic doesn't have to mean dull or boring!
