How to make a flower bouquet for your Christmas cake

You may have already heard the expression that we eat with our eyes first. This means that the appearance of a meal can make it more appealing or it can take on a less than appetizing look. All the more reason to decorate your Christmas cake just right! Here's how to make your own flower topper for that festive cake.

You will need:

  • Three small roses
  • Hypericum berries
  • Ivy leaves
  • Additional foliage
  • Floral wire and tape
  • Ribbon

Method:

  • Make sure that you clean all of your flowers, leaves, and berries before you begin.
  • Trim the stems, wire them, and use green floral tape to conceal the wire. The wire needs to pierce the base of the flower and turn around like a hairpin. Twist the two ends together before covering with tape.
  • Start by making a bow from your ribbon and set it aside.
  • One of your roses will be the focal flower and it needs to be placed in the centre.
  • Add two more roses and make sure that they are situated below the main rose.
  • Add berries around the roses and then add some foliage.
  • Now include the bow to the design and surround the arrangement with some ivy leaves.
  • You can secure the stems together using another piece of wire. Do this as close to the flowers as possible.
  • Split the stems into three and apply floral tape to create a kind of tripod.
  • Flatten the three legs of the tripod to create a base for the arrangement and add it to the top of your cake.
