How to Keep Pigeons Away from the Balcony

Posted on the 08 January 2023 by L'Express

Pigeons are often considered pests due to their ability to cause noise pollution and damage property and spread disease. Additionally, they tend to nest in large numbers, which can lead to unsanitary conditions. Fortunately, there is a solution to keep these birds away. Find out what it’s all about!

Why do pigeons come to your balcony?

There are several reasons why pigeons can come to your balcony. Here are some possibilities:

  • They look for food: Pigeons are known to be opportunistic animals that are always looking for food. If you feed the pigeons on your balcony or if there are food scraps that attract the birds, they may be attracted to your balcony.
  • They are looking for a place to roost: Pigeons need a safe and stable place to roost to rest and protect themselves from predators. If your balcony provides a safe and comfortable place for pigeons, they can roost there.
  • They are looking for a place to breed: If your balcony offers a safe and quiet place for pigeons, they can build a nest there and lay their eggs there.

    Use vinegar

Pigeons, when they find a place to nest, can be very troublesome and are also a source of infection birds, as their droppings are corrosive and can affect the exterior of buildings. If they have nested on your balcony or terrace, chasing them away and deterring them can be a real headache.

Pigeons, like other animals, do not like certain smells. These birds are sensitive to vinegar and will run away when they smell it. You can use this information to your advantage by pouring vinegar into a container and placing it on your balcony or windowsill. This should discourage pigeons from roosting on these spots.

    Add chillies and pepper

Birds do not tolerate the smell of vinegar, hot peppers and pepper. In a spray bottle, prepare a mixture of water with the addition of chili powder or pepper. Dissolve the spice and spray it on all the places that the pigeons particularly prefer. The pungent smell will keep birds away from your balcony or windowsill.

Keep your trash cans away from pigeons

Pigeons are attracted to garbage cans because they often contain leftover food. To keep pigeons away from trash cans, make sure they are always well covered. You can also put a brick on the lid to prevent pigeons from opening it.

    Block Entry Points

Pigeons often enter homes through open windows or ventilation holes. To keep them out, be sure to plug these openings. You should also check your home for any cracks or holes that pigeons might use to enter and seal them with caulk or other materials.

    Use other repellents

There are many pigeon repellents on the market, including devices and sprays. These repellents work by emitting sounds or smells that the pigeons find unpleasant, causing them to stay away from the area. Be sure to read the instructions carefully before using any repellent and reapply it as needed to maintain its effectiveness.

Of course, there are other methods to repel pigeons. You can use :

    • holographic bands,
    • bird kites,
    • Figurines of birds of prey (it is worth hanging them from the ceiling of the balcony, so that the wind can set this plastic repellent in motion),
    • Balloons,
    • A device that emits sounds of birds of prey,
    • A net that covers the entire balcony (it has a fine weave that makes it almost invisible from afar).
