How to Keep Cool on Summer Nights

By Sharon Dalzell @Dalzells_Beds

With all this glorious sunshine the feel good factor can be felt all around as people make the most of these balmy days with BBQs and soaking up the rays.

Of course, hot sunny days also mean hot sticky nights and – for many – disrupted sleep!

With the temperature set to rise even higher this week in Northern Ireland, it’s important to keep cool in bed for a good night’s sleep.

Summer sleep tips

Follow the simple steps below to ensure you stay cool and comfortable and avoid a miserable and restless night in bed.

How to sleep on summer nights

  • Open windows – and doors – to create a draught
  • Use a cotton sheet or a duvet with a low tog rating
  • Wear light cotton nightwear to help the skin breathe and prevent overheating
  • Enjoy a cool shower (or bath) before bedtime to help bring the body temperature down
  • Drink plenty of cold water and always keep a glass handy by the bed
  • Avoid too much alcohol or a big meal as both can lead to disrupted sleep
  • Fill a hot water bottle with ice cold water to create a cooling effect
  • Put your pillow case in the fridge before bedtime
  • Invest in some pillow and mattress protectors to help draw moisture away from the surface
  • Use an electric fan during the night to create a cool breeze

If you or your partner struggle to keep cool at night, make sure your bed is roomy enough for two.  Remember bigger is better!

Next time you buy a new bed, make sure it’s big enough for two of you to sleep without disturbing each other: a 5ft bed should be your minimum.
