How to Improve Indoor Air Quality and Breathe Easier at Home

Posted on the 06 December 2024 by Shoumya Chowdhury

Poor air quality indoors can lead to a number of issues, from spreading illnesses to allergies and asthma. When the air quality is poor, there are a number of things homeowners can do to improve it and to make sure they can breathe easily in their own homes. A few of the things they may want to consider doing to improve the air quality in the home include the following.

Have the HVAC System Inspected

The HVAC system plays a major part in improving your indoor air quality. If the HVAC system is not working properly or it is dusty, it can cause dust and other contaminants to spread through the home. Proper HVAC maintenance can help prevent dust and debris from building up in the HVAC system, keep it working properly to cycle the air within the home, and help prevent many contaminants from getting into the air in the home.

Keep the Home Clean

Keeping the home clean can help improve the air quality, but it is important to clean properly. Homeowners should take steps to remove the dust and other contaminants from the home, including dusting frequently, vacuuming carpets regularly, and using the right cleaning products to remove contaminants from the home. Even if the home is already kept clean, some changes to how it’s cleaned can help improve the air quality.

Change the Air Filters Regularly

The air filters for the HVAC system will capture many contaminants and dust to prevent them from moving around the home. However, the filters won’t work properly if they are left in place too long. Instead, it is better to change the air filters more frequently. Most manufacturers will recommend changing the filters every one to three months. When the goal is to improve air quality, though, it may be better to change the filters a little bit more frequently to make sure they are able to work as expected.

Open the Windows for Fresh Air

Opening the windows can allow more fresh air to enter the home. Even during summer or winter months, when opening the windows typically isn’t done to help prevent the house from getting too hot or too cold, it can be beneficial. Opening the windows even a little bit can help with removing the air inside the home and replacing it with fresh air that’s easier to breathe. When the weather’s perfect, open even more windows for better air exchange.

Keep Plants Outside

Plants are able to help add oxygen to the home, but studies have found that they can actually contribute negatively to the air quality. If care isn’t taken to keep the plants clean and free of dust or other contaminants, they can actually collect more dust and won’t have a positive impact on the air quality in the home. It’s better to leave them outside and open the windows more often to enjoy the outdoors instead of bringing plants inside.

If you’re wondering why everyone keeps getting sick or you’re tired of dealing with allergies in the house, it might be time to look at the indoor air quality. Use these tips to help improve the air quality in the home and keep everyone healthier. Improved air quality starts today with the right steps.
