How to Get Your Backyard Ready for Summer

By Marialiberati

Your backyard can be your own version of paradise this coming summer, a place where you and your family and friends meet up for some iced coffee and a chat. Turning your backyard into something special requires planning, but it's so worth it. If you're thinking about putting your yard in order, here are some ideas to make it a cool space.

Add to Your Garden

A garden not only provides your lawn with spots of beauty, but it can also be a source of food if you grow a vegetable garden. Doing this lowers the amount of money you'll spend on food, cuts down on the time you spend traveling to the grocery store and is an easy way to build exercise into your day. If you don't have the confidence to plant a full garden, then why not start with placing some garden boxes along your patio? These are easy to maintain. You don't even have to do much to the soil. You can just buy some soil at your local home and garden store and dump it, along with your plants, into your garden boxes. Make sure that you plant according to the season. Some plants, for example, do better in the spring than others.

Grow Your Lawn

Synthetic grass comes with many benefits, especially if you want to take a more hands-on approach. While many people enjoy taking care of a lawn, it's not a task that everyone wants to take on. If you find yourself in that category, then synthetic grass might be for you. It's easy to install, and today's turf actually looks surprisingly real. Best of all, it leaves you more time to concentrate on the tasks that you do want to do.

Create an Outdoor Room

Turning a patio or a gazebo into an outdoor room increases your living space in the summertime. It's also an economical way to decrease your utility bills if you have a backyard covered with trees. These lawn features shield you from the heat and keep the rest of the house cool. Aside from this, an outdoor room encourages you to slow down and enjoy the birds and other animals at play.

If you want your outdoor space to extend the reach of another room, like the living room, then be sure to choose some decorative items and paint colors that match the interior room. This makes a visual transition from one room to the other without looking jarring.

If you're like many people, then you want the benefit of having an outdoor space to enjoy in the summertime. Unfortunately, you may not have time to do everything that you want to do to get your backyard ready for summer. The trick is to balance out your tasks between those that take a bit more work, like gardening or putting in an outdoor room, with those that take less time, like putting in synthetic grass.
