Google 3D animals are Augmented Reality objects. They are a lot of fun. And they are as easy to get as doing a Google search.
Google announced a bunch of Augmented Reality objects at its I/O conference in 2019. So, Google 3D animals are not very new. However, they are gaining rapid popularity now. The reason for this sudden spurt in popularity is that thanks to COVID-19 lockdowns, people are getting bored at home. So, they are looking for new ways to keep themselves and their kids entertained. And these Google animals are very entertaining.
What can Google animals do?
Well, they actually don't magically appear in your home or gardens. They stay within your smartphones and the AR technology makes it seem as if they are in your spaces.
Within the phone, they can move about a little, change their body postures, and make their sounds. All this makes them feel wonderfully real!
While one person is holding the phone showing the Google 3D animal, another person can walk over to where the animal is supposed to be and get his or her pictures clicked with it. A video cannot be recorded, but I guess if the phone has screen recording, even a video can be created.
These days, lots of such photos and videos are being shared on social media. And that is what's driving the rising popularity of Google animals in 3D.
How to get 3D animals from Google?
It is very simple. You just need to perform a Google search. But you do need a AR ready smartphone. If you have iPhone or iPad, it must have iOS 11 or higher. And it must not be older than iPhone SE or 6S, or a third-gen iPad Air, or fifth-gen iPad, or any iPad Pro.
If you have an Android device, it needs to be ARCore compatible. If your Android device has Android 7 or later, it has a good chance of being compatible. Check out this list of supported devices for Google 3D animals. Your Android phone or tab must also have originally shipped with Google Play Store.
You'll also need Google Chrome on your device and might need to enable camera access in the browser. My sister was able to view the AR animals on Google using the Safari browser after tweaking some settings. So, I guess that works too.
Once you have made sure your device is compatible, just Google. Search using an animal's name such as tiger, bear, deer, etc. You'll see a link in the search result that says View in 3D. Click on it. The screen that opens up will show the 3D model of the animal.
Under it, you'll see another link that says View in your space. When you click on it, your camera app will open. You will be asked to point the camera downwards and cover the space. Once the space mapping is complete, the 3D animal will appear on your phone's screen. And in your camera app, it will look as if it is standing in your room or garden or wherever you are.
