How to ensure healthy vision in your 20s or 30s?

Our eyesight is our most important sense that helps us connect with the external environment. It helps us perceive up to 80% of the impressions and a slightly larger part of the brain is dedicated to our vision.

When we are young, we tend to take our vision health for granted. While some people naturally have 20/20 vision and some use glasses to see perfectly, the natural state of your vision never remains the same.

Our carelessness and unhealthy habits raise our chances of developing severe vision problems in the future. If you want to enjoy healthy vision throughout your life, you need to adopt some practices.

Why do you need healthy vision in your 20s or 30s?

Our 20s and 30s are the most crucial years of our lives. We pursue our education, start our career and family during these years. In all these hustles, we somehow forget to take care of our health, especially our eye health.

While you won't be dealing with cataracts or macular degeneration, young adults can develop vision problems caused by visual stress or eye injuries.

Visual stress

No matter if you are a college student or a working professional, an average adult spends at least 6 hours a day staring at digital screens. This is a lot of stress for your eyes which can cause:

The most common factor behind these discomforts is the blue light released from our devices. It reaches the back of our eye and targets retinal cells. If your digital consumption is off limits, you can benefit from a pair of blue light glasses

Eye injuries

Job-related eye injuries are one of the most common causes of vision problems in working adults. Moreover, if these injuries are left untreated, they can lead to permanent vision impairment or blindness.

Here are some eye injuries at work that you should watch out for:

  • Splashes of chemicals
  • Flying metal chips or wood dust
  • Thermal burns
  • Exposure to infrared radiation

Even when you are at home, splashes of household chemicals or drilling materials can pose a significant risk to your eyes. So, whether you are at home or at your workplace, if your surroundings have even a slight risk to your eyes, consider wearing protective glasses. They are easily available with optical lenses in both men's glasses and eyewear for women.

Eye damage from UV light

If you leave your eyes naked to the blazing sun, you are giving an early invitation to cataracts and macular degeneration. These are some of the severe eye conditions that often result in blindness.

Remember, it's not just your skin that needs protection from the sun. Your eyes are equally vulnerable to the harmful UV light.

What should you do?

Making a few lifestyle changes goes a long way when it comes to protecting our eyes. Even if your vision field is as clear as a crystal, you must not undermine the importance of health eye habits. Here is what you should do:

  • Cut down your screen time and make sure you always have blue light glasses on for computer work. You can also add a blue light coating on the optical lenses of your men's or women's glasses
  • Take screen breaks and change the focus of your eyes. Indulging in close up tasks for prolonged hours can make you shortsighted over time.
  • Never leave your house without having a pair of sunglasses. Sunnies are equally important in winter as well. They will eliminate glare and prevent eye damages resulted from road accidents.
  • Take some time out from your day and perform some eye exercises. It will relax your optic muscles and relieve eye pain from digital work.
  • We understand that you are young and restless, but your eyes need some rest. So make sure you get at least 5 hours of sleep in a day.
  • Eat foods that are rich in antioxidants, vitamin A & C and carotenoids. They will give a punch of nutrition to your peepers and make them healthy.
  • Wear proper eye protection at work or doing hazardous tasks at home.
  • Have an annual eye test to check upon your peepers.
