Figuring out how to design your kitchen can feel like a tall order. With so many design aspects to be aware of, it can be hard to know where to start. Thinking about these aspects of your kitchen can make a big difference in its functionality.

Countertops

One of the most important aspects of your kitchen design is your choice of countertop. Not only does the style and material of your countertop largely determine the style of your kitchen, but it also plays a big role in the functionality of your kitchen.

As you’re thinking about the right material for your countertop, there are a couple of options that you might want to steer clear of. Be careful with wood type countertops. If you decide to go with wood, make sure that it is sealed properly so that juices from food can’t seep in and damage or discolor the wood.

Floors

Choosing the right floor for your kitchen is incredibly important if you want your kitchen to be low maintenance. Certain types of flooring may match the style of your kitchen but might be less functional. For example, some types of tile flooring with grout between the tile squares can get easily damaged by a dropped dish or is easily stained by dropped food.

On the other hand, laminate flooring has high durability and doesn’t easily scratch. Additionally, there are a variety of different styles to pick from. Laminate wood flooring can often convincingly replicate the look of hardwood while being much more low maintenance.

Cabinets Built to the Ceiling

Another important design choice that you can make when it comes to building a low-maintenance kitchen relates to how you do your cabinetry. It’s common to build cabinets that don’t go all the way to the ceiling. But when the cabinets don’t go to the ceiling, they accumulate dust and can be less convenient.

Additionally, floor to ceiling cabinets will also help you maximize your space and expand your storage. Having more storage—even when it is higher up—makes a big difference in the functionality of your kitchen.

When you’re designing your kitchen, it can be easy to get carried away in selecting the perfect color scheme and marble. You may be trying to capture a certain style or look. And while it’s essential that you love your kitchen’s design, be sure to think about these suggestions and others to make sure your kitchen’s level of functionality matches its level of style.
