Posted on the 21 May 2020 by Chandigarhayurved

A women's menstrual cycle isn't always regular and irregular periods also called oligomenorrhea.

Some women get their periods right on schedule every 28 days, plus or minus seven days but some women's cycles aren't so predictable.

It can occur during a change in contraception method, hormonal imbalance, hormonal changes during the menopause, and endurance exercises.

To determine whether the menstruation is regular or irregular, count from the last day of the previous period and stop counting on the first day of the next menstrual period.

Repeat this for three months and if the days between these periods are significantly different each month then it is considered an irregular cycle.

A period, or menstruation, is the part of the menstrual cycle in which the endometrium which lines the uterus starts shedding.

During this the bleeding from the womb starts that is released through the vagina.

Menstruation usually starts during puberty, between the ages of 10 to 16 years, and it continues until menopause, around the age of 45- to 55-years old.

Irregularity is also normal and expected during menarche (when your periods first begin), perimenopause (when they are coming to an end), after pregnancy, and using a method of hormonal birth control.

The use of contraceptives can cause irregular bleeding. These Intra-uterine devices may cause heavy bleeding, while the use of contraceptive pills can cause spotting between the periods and the bleed is generally shorter and lighter than the normal.

Other common causes of irregular periods are:

  1. Too much exercise
  2. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  3. Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
  4. Thickening of or polyps on the uterine lining
