Cosy or Airy?
The first thing to consider is what you want the overall aesthetic of your bedroom to be. The key to deciding this is to think of a space that you find relaxing and imagine bringing the essence of that into your room. You might picture a cosy, wooden log cabin with a hearty fire in the grate and plenty of warm blankets and cushions. If so, go for a cosy aesthetic – create warmth in the room with the right lighting and deep, rich colours and you’ll be chilling out in no time. Wooden furniture really ties this look together, so if you haven’t got any it’s worth investing in some – the natural grain of the wood will make your space feel more natural and harmonious. Check out Trade Furniture Company for some great pieces. If you’re picturing something much lighter and brighter you could go for an airy feel, with lots of sheer window coverings floating on a light breeze and whitewashed walls and floors.

Use Scent
Scent is so evocative and can bring an instant sense of calm, as well as, bring back happy memories. It’s always best to go to a shop and actually sample the scents of candles or room diffusers rather than just reading the descriptions – you really never know how you’ll react to different scents, and getting something you don’t like is completely the opposite of what we’re trying to achieve!
If you’ve gone for a cosy feel a rich, smoky scent is really fitting – especially if you don’t have a fireplace of your own. True Grace make a library candle that fits the bill perfectly, it also has notes of amber and moss. For a light and airy room, look for a candle or diffuser with notes of fresh herbs like wild mint or basil and lemon – it will make you feel like you’re relaxing in a beautiful garden. For something a little headier, go for the scent of wild English roses. It will contrast beautifully with whitewashed furniture and crisp white linen – this is better in a candle though as then you can only burn it when you want a hit of the scent, a diffuser can become a little overpowering!
Make it You’re Own
The key to a truly relaxing bedroom is to be true to yourself and know what you find relaxing. There’s no point creating a space based on what anyone else thinks is a relaxing bedroom, or from pictures on the Internet – make it yours and you’ll have your sanctuary to enjoy.
