How to Create Classical Home Design

By Kravelv

If you are thinking of redecorating your home you might have started to look at various interior designs for inspiration.  There are some designs, such as shabby chic or art deco, that are very popular right now and look to remain popular for some years, However, if you want a timeless design, something that can last forever without ever going out of fashion while still having that wow factor, then you need something more special, you need a classical home design.  If you are serious about bringing a classical feel into your home then it is a good idea to incorporate it into every room to really get it the wow factor.  With this being said, if you were only looking to re-design one room, you can still make the design work with impact and create a feel of time changing with every room.

Creating a classical design does not have to be complicated, nor does it have to be expensive, you will more than likely be able to create this feel by using furniture and accessories you already own.  If you do not have everything you need then you can always get second hand belongings and repurpose them. Here are some tips to creating a classical theme in each of your rooms:

  • Bathroom: natural colours have always been one of the biggest trends in the bathroom and these are perfect for creating a classical looking bathroom. Consider using larger tiles and keeping the décor of the room pattern free.
  • Living Area: here you want to create the feel that your living room is an open, wide space that flow. To give the room a light and fresh feel, which is perfect for creating a classical look, you should consider painting your walls to a soft and neutral color.  Avoid patterned wallpapers and anything that makes the room look busy.  Consider reupholstering and switching to light coloured cottons and linens and perhaps add a shaggy or seagrass rug.  To inject some personality and small patterns, use things like pillows and also consider the accessories such as photo frames, lighting, vases etc. that you use to ensure they match your theme.
  • Bedrooms: use a similar guide to your living room, use light colours and avoid making the room too busy looking.  If you want to paper your walls, so that they aren’t all painted a neutral colour, use a simple pattern such as stripes and use a combination of colours, for example, white with gold and powder blue works well. Look at your bed and see if it matches the classical feel if not, maybe think about upholstering a fabric headboard and/or sanding and repainting it completely.  If possible, match the fabric used to upholstery the bed, headboard or furniture, with that of the curtains. Also add plenty of different lighting options, to help you to set the mood.

  • Dining Room: the color scheme for this room is the same as the others, here you should focus more on the accessories you use. Adding things like chandeliers, candelabras, vases of flowers and crystal glassware is what creates the wow factor and classical feel here.
