Copy and paste are among the most common - and overlooked - commands in any operating system, Windows or MacOS. The feature is used to move text around right away, but not everyone knows how to use these features. Fortunately, there are several easy methods to do this with either your mouse, trackpad, or other peripheral devices.

Here is the overview of copying and pasting.

Copy and paste in Windows 10

Although Windows PCs have a consistent theme when it comes to copying and pasting, there are several different ways to do it. Depending on the software, you can use the mouse, keyboard, menu bar, or a combination of all three to get the job done.

While you can argue that some methods are faster than others, the method you choose will largely depend on your personal preferences. So we will break each one down in turn and you can then choose which one is right for you.

Quick tips:
  • Typically, when you right-click a selected item, a menu appears with an option on Copy. Typically, right-clicking in an empty space will bring up a menu with an option on Insert.
  • The keyboard shortcut for copying is Ctrl + C, and the keyboard shortcut is to paste Ctrl + V.

Method 1: with the mouse

Step 1: Making the right choice of the content you want to reproduce is the first step in copying and pasting. If you want to copy an image, right click on it and choose Copy the picture to save a duplicate on the clipboard. Then go to step 3.

For text, left-click and drag the cursor over the part of the document or browser window that you want to highlight. For folders and other items, simply right-click the item once or left-click and drag a selection box around multiple files.

If you want to turn on the keyboard, you can hold Ctrl and click multiple files or the first item in a list while holding down shift Then click on the final item that you want to copy.
