How to Compress Video Files for Android Devices

Just like most mobile devices, the storage space on the majority of Android devices tends to be limited. Some may support expandable storage via microSD cards, but even then there is only so much that you can extend its capacity by.

  • How to Compress Video Files for Android Devices

The limited storage space that is available can be an issue if you want to store lots of video files on your Android device. The file size of videos tend to be relatively large, and will very quickly fill up your storage.

One way that you can store more videos on your Android device despite its limited storage space is to compress your video files and reduce their file size. That can be done in two ways:

Transcode the video to a codec with better compression

By transcoding your video files to codecs that have better compression you can reduce their file size without affecting the video quality. However, there is one big problem with this option: Compatibility.

Simply put the codec that you convert your video to needs to be compatible with your Android device and ideally should have hardware support. That can be an issue, as newer codecs such as H.265 (HEVC) are only supported by newer Android devices.

It is worth checking if HEVC is supported by your device, and if it is you could use it. If not your next best option is H.264 – but many videos may already be encoded in that.

Reduce the video bitrate

The other option that you could use to compress videos for Android devices is to reduce the video bitrate. Unfortunately, this will affect the video quality, and if the bitrate is too low you will start to see compression artifacts in your video.

Suffice to say this option should be exercised with care, and you should gradually reduce the bitrate while keeping an eye on the video quality. Ultimately your goal should be to find a reasonable compromise between the file size and quality of the video.

The main advantage of this option is that you can use it with any video and reduce its file size to make it easier to store on your Android device.

Regardless of the option that you choose, you will need a video converter to convert the video and reduce its bitrate. For example, you could try Movavi Video Converter and follow the steps at www.movavi.com/support/how-to/how-to-convert-mov-to-mp4.html.

All said and done between the two options listed above you should be able to reduce the file size of your videos enough that you can store them more comfortably on Android devices. In some cases, you may even be able to double or triple the number of videos that you can store.
