How to Start a Blog in 5 Easy Steps

Step 1: Asking the Right Questions

Before we begin the exercise, I want to encourage you to think about these questions and answer them honestly. It will not only help you in coming up with a great blog name but also further down the road in your blogging journey.

“The way is in the questions. If you ask the right questions, you will come up with the right blog name.”

1. What is the topic of your blog?

Take some time to figure out what topics you are going to write about and write them down.

This will give you a perspective of the broad range of topics that you are willing to cover and it will also help you to narrow down the main focus of your blog.

For example, if you are starting a blog in the health niche, Do you want to focus on nutrition, diet, eating habits or a certain fitness routine like Yoga, Gym or Pilates etc.?

Having an element of your topic or niche in the domain will make it easier for your audience to understand what kind of content to expect from you.

If you are having trouble to narrow down your focus, you can come up with a generic blog name that does not restrict you to certain topics.

2. What is the tone of voice of your blog?

This needs a bit of introspection.

You need to understand the demographic that you are serving and also your own writing style.

Is your writing style technical? informal? casual? fun?

Also think about this for a second,

What impression do you want your blog name to convey to your readers?

This will help you to assess the message that you are giving out to your visitors.

3. Who is your target audience?

In this competitive age, it is vital for you to define your target audience beforehand.

This will not only help you in coming up with a blog name but will also determine the overall success of your blog.

Defining your audience helps you carve a niche for your blog.

It will help you to understand your readers and create content that will be helpful to them.

It will also guide you to come up with a blog name that resonates with your target audience and keeps them coming to your blog again and again.

Step 2: Key Factors to Consider

1. Prefer Top-level Domains

Top level domains are .com, .org and .net

These are the most well known and recognized domain name extensions internationally.

Moreover, people are accustomed to typing .com at the end of every domain. This makes .com domains much harder to get.

This is the reason .com domain remains my first choice while choosing any domain name.

The second preferred option is the .org, .net or the country code top-level domain that’s reserved for a specific country, in case you want to target only people from that country.

I advise you NOT to use domains like .work, .guru etc. as they are not well known.

2. Blog Name should be easy to say and spell

Your blog name should be short and unique.

It should be easy to say and spell and should not confuse your readers.

Also, make sure that it seems right when it’s written in the address bar.

For ex. sweetsandtoffees.net which is Sweets and Toffees.

Before deciding on your domain name, make sure the words when combined don’t give an altogether different impression.

You can learn from some of the examples here:

penisland.net – They sell pens here. ( No such thing as bad publicity!)

3. SEO

SEO is a very significant factor while naming your blog.

If you want your website to rank and show up in search results, it definitely makes sense to include your main keyword in the domain name.

It gives you an extra advantage over your competitors who don’t have a keyword in their domain name.

Some of the examples of websites and blogs using Keywords in a domain name are as follows:

Techradar.com

Photographylife.com

Step 3: The Creative Methods

1. The Mix and Match Method

Just think of all related words relevant to your blog and write them on a piece of paper.

This is an old school way of doing things, but still, a very effective way to come up with great blog names.

Just use different combinations and see which perfectly fits your blog.

You can then start putting these words in Bust a name to check if any of those combinations are available.

You can also take help of the coming methods to come up with unique domain names.

2. Use the “Amplifier Method”

This is my favorite method of coming up with names of my blog.

An amplifier is a word that magnifies the impact of the word, it is attached with.

Just use your [most relevant keyword or idea] + [An Amplifier] to come up with great blog names.

An amplifier could be any word that enhances the meaning of a word, it is attached with.

Some examples:

[ Blog ] + [ Fundamentals ] = Blog Fundas

[ Mom] + [ Wellness ] = Wellness Mama

3. Alliteration

Alliteration is the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

Some of the examples of Alliteration are as follows :

Skill Security .Com

Music Mayhem. Com

This method is very effective in finding names that are memorable and also rhythmic to sound.

4. Check competition

You can also check out your competitors to see which names are they using.

This can also be a good source of inspiration for you because in most cases, your competitors have already done most of the hard work for you.

You just need to see which blog names work in your niche and you can add your own twist to it and create brand new names for your blog.
